Charlotte Hall - I Feel Alive

Charlotte Hall – I Feel Alive | Eternal vitality

I Feel Alive by Charlotte Hall is a reality check for those who have stopped living life for whatever reason. With its powerfully emotive rock instrumental setup, it reminds the listener to chase after what makes them feel alive. There also seems to be a soft folk vibe somewhere in there. This makes the song a bit more exciting and dreamy. Charlotte Hall is the vocalist and electric guitarist for the track, while Dave Gerhart plays acoustic, bass, and drums.

The song I Feel Alive takes the listener’s attention straight from the start. Charlotte uses this moment to remind you to step out of the nine-to-five rut. Her vocals are very refined with a definite touch of the classical and opera style. She carries a joy in her voice as she admits that she found the city that makes her feel alive every day. The entrancing, melodic electric guitar solo at the bridge reminds you of the things which feel but different — and in that way feel real. It embodies the essence of the song, and in a way the essence of life as well!

Charlotte Hall is drawn to many genres, given her vast musical background that ranges from classical music, to songwriting, to much more. Some artists who inspire her include Paramore, Yungblud, Fleetwood Mac, and Blondie. Based out of Chesterfield in the UK, she has already been all over the BBC. Her latest music is a result of her pairing up with The Online Recording Studio in 2021.

In Conversation with Charlotte Hall

Ques. You have an interesting background in music, can you tell me about that?

Charlotte Hall: Music has been present in my life ever since being small. I started learning the guitar when I was in Primary School and then started singing lessons during my teens. I really began to enjoy music around this time and really wanted to pursue it as a career. Further, I went on to study both a BA and Masters at University, where I mostly focused on classical music singing and playing double bass. I wanted to try writing songs for a long time but didn’t have much self-belief — especially during my undergraduate years. It was just for fun that I released my debut single in 2018 and never expected it to be picked up by BBC Introducing. That was a big turning point for me of wanting to pursue songwriting full time.

The story of I Feel Alive

Ques. What made you feel so alive to make this song — is it dedicated to a city? Let’s hear about that.

Charlotte Hall: Yes, it’s a bit of an ode to Sheffield, which has a great indie music scene. It has notable alumni such as Arctic Monkeys, While She Sleeps, Bring Me The Horizon, Pulp, Human League, and Def Leppard to name a few. It’s called the ‘Northern Capital of Cool’ and that is for a good reason! When I moved away from York I found myself there a lot, recording new music and also playing open mics. The people are friendly and there’s always something going on! Right from a young age I always felt at home in Sheffield, I don’t know if it is because quite a lot of my family live there, or it is a place I have been able to pursue what I truly wanted to.

The artist’s intent

Ques. What do you wish for a new listener to take away from your music, and from the song I Feel Alive?

Charlotte Hall: ‘I Feel Alive’ is breaking out of a routine and to start pursuing what you really want to do. This does not necessarily just apply to musicians either. Someone could have a dream of starting a business or having a perfect job. It’s never too late to start either.
‘I Feel Alive’ came together in the aftermath of a ‘Quarter Life Crisis’. For a lot of people in their twenties, this is a relatable and stressful period of time. Having said that, there is some good that comes out of it; that is knowing what you do NOT want to do with your life. The lyrics came to me after visiting Sheffield for the first time in months, I had really missed it during the lockdowns and it just felt so great to be back there. I think it was there that I had the realisation of what I wanted to do with my life as well. I find I work better when I get out to a new place, whether it is working on music or getting perspective.

Ques. What pushes you in your music making process? What generally inspires and excites you — what thrill are you chasing?

Charlotte Hall: I think it’s knowing that I would not be content doing anything else. I threw in the towel a few times during the lockdowns after going through writer’s block, but I found myself picking it back up. I was extremely unhappy and really felt the absence of music, whether it was playing live, recording, or writing. At the moment I’m chasing the dream to be a full-time songwriter, writing not just for me but other artists as well. I’ve also learned how important mindset is and whilst it’s not been perfect I’m getting back on track and learning to trust the process!

Ques. You’re working with The Online Recording Studio, so what should we expect from you in the time to come?

Charlotte Hall: There will be new music before the end of the year with my new producer Tom Orrell. And this one will be a bit different from ‘I Feel Alive’ so keep your eyes peeled!
