IreQ Savage – Energy Basin | Familiarly Versatile

IreQ Savage is an artist, engineer and video editor from Orlando, Florida, USA. He, generally, creates music along the lines of Hip-Hop, Rap and lo-fi Hip-Hop. While most artists focus solely on one craft, IreQ is a step ahead with his engineering and video editing skills. However, his music speaks volumes of his versatility. His discography alone shows how diversely he thinks with various tracks for any mood. His last EP, Energy Basin, features four tracks mostly alongside Jcpinthecut. With a run time of just 11 minutes, it’s perfect for those little breaks you need away from work.

The EP begins with Cigarettes, a lo-fi experience that is unparalleled. The beats come in the smoothest introduction ever. IreQ Savage has a pretty smooth flow to complement this well. However, it’s all about how he navigates the beat with some incredible rhythms. The production on this track needs to be credited for how well-mixed every element is. Rxmbrvndt cohesively chimes in with his verse that reminds me of that GothBoiClique sound. Incredibly, the song, while short, lingers in your mind as it fades out.

Moving on to Jewelry, the synths welcome you with open arms. Once IreQ Savage starts his verse, you’re caught off guard by how quickly he rips through his bars. This track, while uptempo is still the kind of track you could play while relaxing with some friends. It’s got a certain oomph that reminds me of some of the earlier J Cole beats but that synth speaks for itself. The beats, go hard with that 808 really hitting the sweet spot, but the vocal work is the icing on the cake. With every line that goes by, there’s a new bar to replace it and it is absolutely phenomenal.

Bomb It Up reminds me of some of the production on Childish Gambino’s track, but I prefer this beat. IreQ has a flow that shifts with so much versatility that you can hardly tell one track of his to another. A lot of credit should go to Jcpinthecut, though, because these tracks would not be complete without him. The duo work so well together and created an EP with so much character to it.

The final track, No Doubts, is such a chill track. It takes a break from the near-rage-like flows and uses a more melodic beat. I particularly enjoy how IreQ stays true to his image and his sound. There’s nothing better than a versatile artist who can stay true to form. Moreover, Areo’s feature verse is just so complimentary to his sound. They work so well together, but the IreQ-Jcpinthecut duo is sublime.

To call this EP versatile is an understatement. There is so much more to Energy Basin than you would probably hear in the first listening. Moreover, you can’t go wrong with listening to it more than once considering how short it is and all the little easter eggs you’ll find in each listen.
