“Carousel”, by Ivan Beecroft: As grunge as grunge gets!

Ivan Beecroft is a seasoned songwriter and musician hailing from Melbourne, Australia. For the past two decades, Ivan has played a pivotal role in shaping Melbourne’s vibrant underground music scene. His journey began during the explosive rise of grunge in the 90s, and he found himself immersed in the thriving underground music culture of St Kilda, where luminaries like Tex Perkins, Paul Hester, Sean Kelly, and more achieved commercial success. He now brings to us his latest single, “Carousel”– keep reading for my thoughts!

“Carousel” successfully takes elements from Ivan’s own personal life, from his own internal struggles and the general angst of the grunge era, and brings them together quite nicely. From the start, we’re treated to those trademark crunchy guitars and stylistically slapdash execution of the grunge rock era, while Ivan’s vocals sit atop this solid foundation like buttercream frosting; and the end result?

“Vamos” by Proklaim: This man just gets better and better at rap every day!

You guessed it; an authentic grunge track that gets your head bobbing from the right first second, with the guitar work playing quite the prima donna, with the drums in tight (get the pun?) solid support mode, with its impressive articulation and voice throughout the song. And as the song evolves, the vocals start playing more and more the main character, with Ivan’s vocal work striking quite the balance between clean singing and a gruff overtone that yields a certain element of grit to the track.

In Ivan’s words, “Carousel” serves as a visceral response to Melbourne’s extended lockdowns, written during a period of Orwellian influence and social unrest. Fueled by the anger triggered by intrusive measures and Orwellian slogans, the track’s lyrics express indignant defiance and pure rage, epitomized in the line “It’s not too late to stop this living hell.”

The production is approachable, with a softer sound that makes it a palatable listen for anybody, regardless of their experience with the alternative metal/rock/grunge sound. The mix layers all the instruments nicely, with the overall sound coming out in a way that’s undeniably, unmistakably grunge.

In conclusion, Beecroft’s authentic nod to the grunge era cements “Carousel” as a great track for all fans of rock and grunge, and is sure to amaze with its execution and ideology. Check out the track here!
