Hailing from Asheville, NC, Fractured Frames emerges as a progressive metal powerhouse, wielding down-tuned guitars, crushing grooves, and searing gutturals at the forefront of their sonic arsenal. This powerhouse band swiftly commands attention, solidifying its status as one of the most sought-after live acts in the Southeastern music scene. Keep reading for my thoughts on their latest single, “Atrophy”!
There is nothing about this track that is meek, subdued or passive in nature– come the first second, you’re thrust into this world, a labyrinth of pure power, aggression, and overall, just a cosmic blast of energy that wouldn’t sound out of place on an Archspire record. Once you start reading in between the lines, however, you have layers over layers over layers of pure talent and virtuosity; be it the subtle clean tones in the background while the breakdown attacks you with its fangs bare; or the wide-panned guttural vocal growls that take centre stage (rather proudly) on this track.

There is much to the progressive element on “Atrophy”, too, may I say; especially the center bridge section, with its hammer-on bass lines, with the polyrhythms that even the most seasoned prog metal connoisseur would make a face of approval at; until it all resolves into an epic, wide expanse of sound that just overcomes you and makes you wish this were to never end. An extremely rare combination of the power of deathcore/black metal, and the technical intricacies of progressive and math metal brought together excellently well, that is what “Atrophy” is!

An undeniable aspect of this song’s pure greatness is the production– layered, additive to the experience, and filled with technical mastery; be it in the mix with its seamless layering of all the elements atop each other, or its stereo imaging (seriously, the ears behind this mix may as well be made out of gold); or the master, with its confident, bold stride and sound capturing every cadence, every single inkling of metal this song represents.
“Atrophy” by Fractured Frames, then: what is this song? A piece of art, I say. Check out the track here:
