Ben Weston Latest Single Will Have You ‘Gravitate’ Toward An Inescapable Orbit

Ben Weston is a UK-born multi-instrumentalist who specializes in cinematic soundscapes within the alternative rock genre. His affinity for the genre comes through strongly on his latest release, ‘Gravitate’, which is an atmospheric alternative rock song. Its production is driven entirely by storytelling. The track captures the leaden inertia of a relationship’s final stages and the feeling of being trapped within its emotional orbit.

The Verses

‘Gravitate’ establishes a steady, aloof rhythm right from the outset, as a way to musically mirror the singer’s detachment from the relationship. The guitars, in both verses, have a persistent, saturated sound. The wall of sound feels nonchalant, as if the instrumentation is simply going through the motions. Weston’s vocals, meanwhile, feel anchored and weary like a sonic representation of the physical burden of the room feeling “heavier than it should”.

The Chorus

The “nonchalance” shatters right as the chorus erupts into an expansive panorama. The arrangement of ‘Gravitate’ becomes immersive and vast. It creates a sensation of being suspended mid-air while a “force” seemingly pulls you into the soundscape – just as it pulls the protagonist into their partner’s gravity. The chorus also has a heavy, repeating rhythm that never truly resolves and here’s an instance of the production mirroring the lyrics. The dredges of the relationship are over and it’s simply a “momentum” that can’t be stopped.

The Outro

The soaring instrumental section solo of ‘Gravitate’ knocks the energy into a different “orbit”, sounding like the wordless struggle against the very gravity that the lyrics describe. This leads into an outro that picks up the intensity instead of dissolving. The piece maintains a gritty weight that fights its momentum. Weston doesn’t offer the listeners a clean resolution on the outro and as a result, the listener is suspended in the heat of the friction. It leaves us exactly where we started – locked within the relationship’s gravity, unable to escape its orbit and instead becoming a part of the spin.
