When the time comes to realise the Self, the journey transforms the entire narrative of life. The song “Fabric” by dark-pop band Marie Franc is the story of unraveling one’s identity in this world. The lyrics begin with, “I’m a lord/ I’m a puzzle/ I’m a plague”, which tells how fragmented and ego-based someone is. In a world like today, generations after generations have been shaped by the external; the social, religious, economic, and political culture, rather than what’s inside one’s own body; instinct, intuition, gut feeling, or knowing what the heart wishes. Marie Franc in “Fabric” peels back a numerous-layered onion. Their music cuts deep, while the raw, honest words sting.

The song’s composition is artful, just like the path of transformation. The waves of high and low, falling with self-doubt & loathing, and rising with the realisation and acceptance. The vocals sway between a vulnerable, fragile place and tenderness, control. By the end, the gap between “I am new” and thus confused and angry is cross-stitched. The awareness of the presence of pleasure in the pain and vice versa is reached. The lyrics are indomitable, and my favourite line is, “You’ve been waltzing on the dancefloor of my brain…I am pleasure/ I am darness”.

Marie Franc began as a small band in Manchester, honing their sound in indie clubs. Their first EP, Birthday, was just the beginning, and by 2025, they returned with Saturday Boy. It felt darker, deeper, and full of feeling. Songs like “Loungewear” and “Leave the Light On” drew people in, and soon, sold-out shows followed. On stage, Rachel’s haunting voice and the band’s smoky guitars fill the air. The crowd sways, feels, and escapes, like stepping into a soft, flickering memory.
