“Some Trips”, by Antonio Solombrino: An exciting experimental electronic EP!

Antonio Solombrino, brings his latest in trip-hop experimentation to his newest EP, “Some Trips” — fusing together a blend of trip hop, electronic ambient and dance music — keep reading for my thoughts!

The EP opens with “Blu”, an experimental trip-hop piece that starts out gentle, but brings in layers over layers of experimentation that lend it a modern, polished sound right from the get go. The sound design sees a great emphasis on ambient sounds and textures, and bring a wide, expansive atmosphere to the track, setting the stage for the rest of the EP quite well.

“Crazy Pumpkin” comes next on “Some Trips”, this time, switching the sound up completely in favour of a more aggressive sound that sees inspiration from acid hip-hop, as well as the more psychedelic side of music — from its fast-paced arpeggios to its complex, layered sound that retains a good amount of punch throughout the track. There’s just as much ambience, too, however, continuing the theme of ambient electronic production quite nicely.

“Long Way Home” brings in the jazzier elements, making use of catchy, staccato piano chords, and plucky synths held together by the low-end, where the bass sees a lot of play and presence. The addition of the brasses is also quite tasteful, with a smooth, engaging overall flow and an upbeat, cheerful sound. “Some Trips” also brings “This Is The Sound of The Mountains”, a slower, more deliberate number that takes a turn into more melancholic, rainy sounds. The tension that Antonio builds in the production is palpable — and the energy is gentle to build and release. When the bass drops, he adopts a deep hip-hop sound soundtracked by engaging, groovy drums, with the pianos keeping the percussion rather nice company throughout.

“Some Trips” brings its journey to a close with “Trip On The Moon”, that serves to wrap the theme of the EP up quite nicely, with its bluesy chords, high piano lines, and swinging acoustic drums with an electronic twist. There is much to appreciate about the articulation and the turntable work on this track, and overall, makes for a great listen.

All in all, “Some Trips” by Antonio Solombrino is a captivating exploration into trip-hop, electronic ambient, and dance music. Solombrino’s fusion of these genres creates a dynamic and immersive listen from start to finish– and is worth a shot! Check out the EP here:
