“Stranger In The Barn”, by Ismay: A carousel of easygoing, ballad-like pop

Singer-songwriter Avery Hellman, who grew up backstage at their grandfather’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival and was early on influenced by performers like Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, and Hazel Dickens, is the driving force behind the collaborative project Ismay. With their latest release, “Stranger In The Barn”, they bring a soothing, indie pop sound to the fore. Keep reading for what I think!

The song starts out with an acoustic guitar intro, with maracas and drumsticks gently keeping time, as Avery’s gentle, soothing vocals kick in and deliver themes of mystery, and wrap them together in a pleasant-sounding presentation that ends up being a rather impressive listen.

The production of the song strikes me as whole, rounded, and elegant in its minimalistic themes, yet leaves no stone unturned in expression, in the name of simplicity. The mix is full, and the vocals shine through beautifully, creating a bubble of emotion that the listener is free to revel in for the duration of the song and much furthermore.

With “Stranger In The Barn”, Ismay bring a refreshing take on soft indie pop, and I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. Check out the track here!
