It’s always a joy to listen to the mother of all genres and Josh Allen and the Whisky Brothers remind us of the eternal relevance of the blues. In their latest single titled Yarden Blues, we get to hear a good with a hypnotic vibe reminiscent of Peter Green. The Austin, Texas band features the namesake Josh Allen on guitars/vocals, Ryan “Ry Whisky” Boone on the bass, Steven “Sweets” Balthaser on guitars, and Matt Boettcher on drums. The band which was formed in 2007, has had a prolific discography that includes two LPs and an EP.
Yarden Blues is a song in the legacy of the classic blues-rock groove of the 60s. It reminds you of listening to the Beano album John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers featuring Eric Clapton. As soon as we finish a verse, we get to hear a tasty solo. Cheers to more solos and lyrical guitar phrasing! Like most songs in the vintage blues-rock tradition, the song uses musical call and response. Josh Allen and the Whisky Brothers’ influences include John Hurt, Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, and Tom Waits.
The band’s previous releases reflect more of early Led Zeppelin hedonism thematically versus more reflective material which they strive to write now. To that effect, Yarden Blues has some good old playing and songwriting which brings us back to the essentials of solid compositions in the blues and rock music style. Away from the trappings of fancy production and effects, genuine real music is what we get to hear in this single. Classic blues is alive and well and Yarden Blues by Josh Allen and the Whisky Brothers is living proof.
