Chris Stowe, known by his alias NatStar, is a rapper, singer and producer from Los Angeles, California. LOCK is Stowe’s first single of 2022 following the release of his 2021 album, ‘THE CODE’. Having spent over a decade in the industry producing for artists like Lil Wayne and Freddie Gibbs, the prolific rapper flaunts his veteran status on LOCK.
LOCK is a soul trap-style banger with growling synthetic bass and lush, dreamy keyboards. The chords and melodies are dark and moody. With a length of two and a half minutes, LOCK floats along on at a mid-tempo pace. Artists with a similar brooding production style like James Blake and Metro Boomin come to mind. Additionally, NatStar’s lyrical flow is diverse and refined. He’s able to effortlessly switch up his flow across the length of the track without compromising on the vibe of the track. Moreover, he shows an exemplary amount of experience with his artistic expression and production. There’s a reason why NatStar has worked with so many big names in the industry and it’s probably because of how good he is at what he does.
I find that NatStar is the kind of underrated artist that you would probably hear on a track and not know of. However, you would probably know some of his music without recognising the artist. Similar to how Pharell worked in the background, he’s made a name for himself and is breaking out.
