Aldís Fjóla is a singer-songwriter based in the farmlands of Iceland. Her music features heavy, grungy tones that take inspiration from the grunge rock era. From Borgarfjörður eystra, she developed a sound that flaunts how powerful and confident she is. Moreover, she began her career at the really young age of 10. She cited influences from Skunk Anansie, Pearl Jam, No Doubt and Alanis Morisette. Her ability to create a full sound with her eclectic use of tones and harmonies is absolutely brilliant.
Her latest single, Burn, is an insanely explosive track with powerful, dark tones. She explores darker tones with a 90s grunge sound that you can hardly distinguish from the legends. Additionally, she stated that she used this track to help her find her way. The lyrics reflect that while the instruments add so much emotion by accentuating them. The guitars fill in the spaces with heavy riffs while the drums sound explosive and give the song so much texture. Moreover, the bass really fills the track up and gives it a load of depth.
Aldís Fjóla has got a strong voice that seems to light up everything it touches. Moreover, her music takes you on a journey of help and immerses you in the song entirely. Moreover, she creates a vibe that takes you back in time for a fresh take on grunge rock. Aldís Fjóla is the kind of artist who can tell a story while also making a spectacle of it.

When did you discover your affinity for music?
I have always listened to music with a great passion. When I was around 8 years old I used to hijack the living room and hold a daily dance party with a lot of emotions and interpretations when no one was watching. I have always been drawn to lyrics, the meaning of them and what story they are telling and I was not that old when I started feeling the atmosphere of the song and crying or laughing with the artist. As I got older, music helped me go through a lot of emotions and trauma by screaming out songs by Skunk Anansie, Pearl Jam, Portishead, No doubt and more bands. I go to music to understand myself better and to let out anything that is going on inside of me.
How do you go about creating a song like Burn?
Burn is a collaboration with my producer and co-writer, Stefán Örn Gunnlaugsson at Studio Bambus. This song was created in 2 hours in a studio, where we went over different beats and landed on what you hear. After the session, I went home and wrote the lyrics. They are a conversation with myself. How not to get discouraged by others trying to tell you how to live your life, but find your own crazy path and keep on going. After that, we go back to the studio and my band came and played their parts one by one. It was an adventure.
Who helped you develop your sound if there was anyone at all?
My sound on my debut album, Shadows, and this EP that Burn is the first single of, is a collaboration with my dear friend and genius musician, Stefán Örn Gunnlaugsson. His mind and his musical talent is beyond understanding, and I wish I could sometimes see how his brain works. He hears arrangements and brings ideas that always fit my vision.
What would you say has been the most difficult part about making music?
Not giving up basically. Patience is not my friend sometimes and we can often have hard critics in our heads. The most important thing is to give yourself a break. Don’t criticize it while you are writing it, first be in the flow of writing, let it all out, then take a break and come back to the song later to continue.
Do you have any advice for anyone who plans on making a career out of music?
Just do it. Try it. Fail and stand up. Write the silly lyrics and let everything out. Figure out which direction you want to go and surround yourself with people you trust and help you grow. Write a song and release it. Don’t overthink it.
What’s next for Aldís Fjóla?
Well, we are in the studio now recording the EP that will be released next October and after that, I would love to plan a tour abroad. That would be amazing. I’m just so ready to stand on stage again and see beautiful faces before me.
