Wheel of Time is an international collaborative project led by Chinese guitarist Jimmie Hong. Their debut single “Grand Cosmos” is a progressive metal masterpiece featuring some of the biggest names in the genre. With Tom MacLean (Psion, To-Mera, former Haken) on bass and production, Derek Sherinian on synth and keysmith (former Dream Theater, Planet X), Clark McMenemy (Ihlo) on drums, and the incredible vocals of Craig Cairns (Induction, Tailgunner), this track is a true showcase of musical virtuosity and prog finesse.
The syncopated drum intro sets the stage for the technical yet melodic and progressive music to come. The melodic yet raspy, gritty tenor vocals of Cairns are sharp and powerful, reminding listeners of the best of heavy progressive metal tradition. The persistent chord progression might also remind one of the intergalactic Opeth and Mastodon influences as the Dream Theater-like feel is present, adding depth and complexity to the already impressive composition. Like any good quality prog song, the track keeps you on your toes and takes you by surprise with its melodic technicality. As MacLean mentioned this track also includes Deep Purple influences.
But it’s not just the instrumental insanity that makes “Grand Cosmos” stand out. The lyrics penned by Hong are beautifully written, providing a perfect complement to the music. Cairns’ flawless vocals carry the emotion of the song, conveying a sense of joy and energy that is infectious. The chorus is a true highlight, featuring eclectic synths that add a searing sense of joy and energy to the track. It’s hard not to feel uplifted and inspired by the music of Wheel of Time, especially when they are joined by such talented collaborators.
“Grand Cosmos” is a galactic endeavor and an example of progressive metal at its finest. With its technical prowess, melodic sensibilities, and flawless execution, it’s sure to become a fan favorite. Wheel of Time has created a true masterpiece, and I can’t wait to hear what they come up with next.
