Instrumental music has always been a big part of history, just as much as the kind that has human voices. When it comes to modern compositions with just musical instruments (in the conventional sense of the word), people only have gotten better over time at expressing ideas through techniques unique to each instrument, and styles unique to the person playing them. In “Teardrops” by Elad David, these themes are only further explored and redefined. Keep reading for my thoughts about the same!
The song starts off with a gentle yet energetic intro on the acoustic guitar, with immediately evoked a sense of calm in me, with the mysterious percussion instruments that sound halfway between bongo drums and the traditional Indian percussion instrument, the ghatam (a percussion instrument made out of clay pots). Rhythms are explored on the percussion while the melody and the main pulse of the song are held together by the guitar, and this makes for a very curiosity-inspiring listen, with the techniques being used on the guitar of noteworthy mention. The playing seems flowy, natural, and the various segments of the piece are glued together, almost magically, by the graceful fills, the bible handiwork on the strings, as well as the piccolo-esque instrument playing consistent countermelodies throughout the duration of the song.
You know what they say– the lesser colours somebody uses to depict something, the more implied meaning there exists to a painting– and that is definitely the case with the mix and master here. A minimally themed production like this is, just as hard to get right melodically, as it is hard to mix and get sounding just right. I’m glad to report that that is more than the case here. The guitar has excellent body, with the subtle inner resonances within all the instruments getting captured vividly, which brings a level of appreciative detail to the song to keep any discerning listener happy for many listens over and over.
With “Teardrops”, I think Elad David knocked it out of the park. Teardrops gets my two-thumbs-up recommendation! Check out the song here:
