Say It To Me Softly
The EP begins with a dramatic dark synth that sets the gripping soundscape of “Say It To Me Softly” right from the start. The addition of the congo to the rhythm progression is quite unique – it sticks out in the mix and makes for a very interesting beat. Porcelain’s female vocalist has sung with a gloomy yet seductive tone in this track – her vocal texture perfectly fits the aura quite well. Porcelain is introducing a variety of styles on track one of the EP – lush strings, melancholy piano fillers, gritty basses, and thrilling electronics.
Hollow – Extended Version
Porcelain really enjoys playing around with instruments of the orchestra. The dark ambience of “Hollow” is set by the sustained string section that’s present throughout most of the track. We hear the airy and calm vocals of one of the male vocalists from the collective here for the first time. The first two tracks are similar in that they feature a multitude of captivating transitions that hold the listening audience’s attention. All in all, a wonderfully composed track with impeccable mixing!
Resting Place
With a lot of low-end energy from the bass, “Resting Place” begins with a subtle trumpet and some sampled vocal chops that are submerged in reverb, creating a dusky atmosphere. The singer from track number one returns, but her vocal style is a bit different due to her raw and strong vocal delivery here. In addition to panning snares and certain percussive elements, “Resting Place” has an incredibly entrancing three-dimensional space – it’s staggering how complex the production is in these tracks!
Hold Me In The Dark – Extended Version
Operatic vocals, dark textures, and Porcelain’s favourite string section make up the intro of “Hold Me In The Dark”. With its enchanting vocals and resounding ad-libs, the track has a bit of a middle-eastern feel to it. The track is mostly made up of a deep bass, a wailing synth, and captivating electronic beats that are in keeping with the ‘Porcelain’ sound.
Summary
It’s amazing how the vocals blend seamlessly with this album’s murky atmosphere. The mixing is amazing, and the compositions are even better! Porcelain are unique in so many ways, and their anonymity is and will likely remain an important part of their musical endeavors in the future. “Part Two” was a riveting listening experience and I’m really eager to listen to their final EP of the set!
