Kansas City-based indie artist Julia Desimone, better known by her artist alias Monster Planet, takes pride in her sound, a blend of lo-fi, synthwave inspired pop music with a charm, and grooves for days — and on her latest single, “Blinded”, she brings forth a sound that is warm, and engaging — keep reading for my thoughts!
The track opens to the gentle strums of the guitars that showcase the creativity in the production right from the get go; and as the vocal lines kick in, the harmonies build from right the first second, painting quite the beautiful picture, making light work of comforting the listener, and getting them into the groove quite comfortably. As the lyrics roll off the music, the energy picks up quite beautifully with a potent low-end, and ringing synths that bring all the charm they can.

“Blinded” stands out in its song structure, as well, with beautifully crafted melodic lines and variations that constantly give the listener’s ears something new to nibble on — and the bridge sections are beautifully done with the gentle swell and ebb of energy that the retro-electronic drums bring; and as we bring the song to a close, the crunchy electric guitars in the background only add further to the charm of this track.
The production seamlessly folds and bends genres, ranging from pop to synthwave, to feel-good lofi hip-hop music, albeit with energy and pizzazz resonating throughout the whole track. The lows are deep and thumping, the mids rather well balanced, and the highs sparkly and energetic, yielding a beautiful, well-rounded sound to “Blinded’. There’s also much to appreciate about the mix and master, that bring all the elements together with balance and poise, making for a rewarding, repeat-worthy listen.
