Night Talks is an alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California. The band makes you feel extremely nostalgic with angelic atmospheres combined with this almost discotheque-y soundscape. The three-piece band is extremely passionate, and it shows through the music.
Overcome is a track that is, insanely, filled with raw passion and emotion. The incredible Soraya (frontwoman of Night Talks) has such gracefully powerful vocals that fit perfectly in the mix to give it this divine feeling. The reverb, perfectly applied, gives the listener this whole feeling, especially with the rest of the instruments filling in the spaces. I cannot express how much I love the instrumental to Overcome. The organic instruments of guitar and drums drive the track forward as this distorted synthy bass hits to overwhelm the listener. The high synth in the chorus absolutely hits close to home, taking it back to where it started.
What’s ironic is the lyrics say “I won’t look back”, but all Night Talks makes me want to do is go back to my teenage years where I discovered bands like Turnover and Fleetwood Mac and artists like Mattafix.
I don’t know what it is, but Night Talks manages to overwhelm you with the music. You really feel moved after listening to tracks like Overcome.
We were able to get in touch with Night Talks and were lucky enough to score an interview. Read on down below!
How did you guys form Night Talks?
Jacob and I met in high school and started playing music together. A few years later we met Josh and decided to get serious and become Night Talks.
What do you guys feel is your best track so far and what makes it so?
That’s like asking to pick a favorite child! What I love about our upcoming album is how my favorite song will always change depending on my mood. I think right now “Overcome” is definitely one of my favorites, along with an unreleased song called “Watching, Waiting.” I love both of those because they make me want to dance.
What’s the craziest thing you guys have had to deal with while at a live show?
To be honest, live shows usually run pretty smoothly! I remember there was one show we played where I forgot to bring half of my outfit, and we had an awkward amount of time between soundcheck and the show. I usually show up to soundcheck in my normal clothes and get changed before the show. I had a photoshoot earlier that morning, so I was pretty scrambled and only remembered my makeup and the shirt I was planning to wear, but not my show pants or shoes. I was pretty dressed up on the top half and pretty casual on the bottom. We were playing somewhat late in Hollywood, so we had time to get a nice dinner and do a full Escape Room before our set. That felt pretty crazy to me, at least!
Can you tell us about some of your influences?
We’re influenced by a lot of things. I know we all listen to a pretty diverse selection of music between all of us. For me personally, I would say I’m inspired by the indie rock of my teen years, Country/Americana, and the films of David Lynch and John Cassavetes. I try to pull inspiration and influence from every aspect of my life and not just music. I also make Spotify playlists every month that I post to the Night Talks page!
What goes into the process of writing music at Night Talks?
It’s a lot of trial and error. Every once in a while we’ll have a song come together somewhat immediately, but usually Jacob and Josh will come up with a cool part at rehearsal and we’ll just work on finessing the drums and vocals for a while. Sometimes nothing will come of it, and sometimes it’ll evolve about eight more times before becoming the finished product.
What can you tell us about Overcome that you’d want people to take away from the track?
“Overcome” is a song about growing no matter how painful or tough it is. At the end of the day, it should be uplifting. I hope that people enjoy the track and that maybe it helps people to let go of things that no longer serve them or that are holding them back from growing.
