Deflecting Ghosts is a rock and alternative metal trio from Hutchinson, Kansas, led by Luke Fitzgerald with his wife Rhema on bass and Austin on drums. Their gritty, emotional sound blends raw melodies with powerful storytelling. Through themes of pain, healing, and resilience, they create music that truly connects — and on their latest single, “Unknowing”, they explore these themes further; keep reading for my thoughts!
There’s a certain sense of dark, charged energy that overcomes you right as this song comes on. Be it the clean electrics in the intro, or the basses that lead gently into the six-beat on the drums that dots the vocals, there’s a certain sombre energy that immediately grounds you, pulling you into the listening experience. The chorus sections on “Unknowing” are laden with beautiful distorted guitar riffs, complemented by the layered vocal presentation, and overall energy.

The execution of “Unknowing” is the star of the show: clean, elegant songwriting melds seamlessly into the skilled instrumental performance. Austin does a stellar job holding the pulse of the track steady, while the guitars make light work of sounding powerful throughout the layered, deep ensemble — all while sounding effortlessly authentic, honest, and energetic.
The mix on “Unknowing” is clean, wide, and perfect for the technical listener — all the elements are superbly placed in the field, there is plenty of low-end punch, and the cymbals make for some much-appreciated sparkle up top. The basses are prominent, punching through the mix with their gritty, fuzzy tones — and the vocals are clear and beautifully sung. As the track comes full circle, there’s a sense of belonging that you feel in this track, like it’s an extension of your own self.
