Decadent Heroes shows an impressive virtuosic range on his album, ‘Climax’

Decadent Heroes shows that live music is not dead. If anything, it beats with a heart of pure skill, passion, and virtuosic talent. Italian guitarist and musician Luigi Chiappini brings to the fold some of the greatest compositions in indie rock, folded in with the motives of some of his greatest inspirations. His latest album Climax shows that nothing can ever replace intense, well-crafted music.

To say that soulful music requires lyrics is a misnomer. Soulful music has to have a story and a reason behind doing it. If mythology isn’t the best kind of storytelling, I don’t know what else is. Opening this album with a song called ‘The Dragon’, Luigi captures the fire, flames, and the fury of the fantastic beast. If it’s the creature’s majestic flight he is capturing, the lead guitar moves in slow when it depicts its intensity. Decadent Heroes know that the moment demands a shred. The synth complements his leads in setting a tone, the same way you would hear in prog rock anthems. This will remind you of early Satriani and Vai.

If there was ever a greater stadium anthem, I wouldn’t know it. Luigi composes ‘Dawn of Fire’ as though he were witnessing it from the stands. The stadium rock beat supports the riff in such a way that you will be singing it the second time around. Rather than hearing the string picking, you hear the effortless flow of the fingers on the fretboard sliding and weaving through the melody. In each song you will see a display of some of the most creative movements you can hear on an electric guitar while still having the grace to not sound gimmicky.

It’s not just music from Luigi you’re listening to. It has features from the likes of world-class musicians like Pino Saracini (Eros Ramazzotti, Anastacia), Dennis Holt (Taylor Swift, Kansas), and Rich Gray (Annihilator).

Real emotion is shown in the guitar ballad that is ‘Minutes Away’. Luigi steps back and lets the emotive nature of his melodic compositions completely take over. It is like listening to a singer take a deep breath and express the innermost desires. A strange atmospheric presence is heard in the song before the hype. It is unlike these previous releases, which do show the running scales of the guitar along with different tonalities. Here it is just you in this echoing reverb chamber where the notes caress you and lull you to sleep.

It clearly was the most awaited build for this album, as it bleeds into ‘Hype’. Like Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train,” this is a run between notes to give you some of the most memorable riffs you’ll ever hear. It is incredible to hear how this artist has shifted gears and whittled details into his storytelling from his previous album ‘Shades of Light’. Through all these songs he is able to pay respect to all those who have inspired him while still framing a future of his own in instrumental guitar composition.

It’s a climax that you’re not just hearing, but earning:
