“As Real As Water” by Lucie Dehli: An experimental pop journey through the elements

Lucie Dehli, a versatile artist, commenced her musical journey back in 1989 as part of the experimental duet, Vicious Circle, alongside Stephan Ink. In her solo career, she delves deeper into her poignant themes, navigating the spectrum between introspection and levity. Keep reading for my thoughts on her latest single, “As Real As Water”!

From the album “Homam”, “As Real As Water” is a song that immediately inspires curiosity with its experimental electronic production, and her long, wafty vocals; with synth elements taking the place of, or augmenting conventional percussive instruments. The style, as a whole, immediately brought me to thinking of one of my own favourite artists, Ruelle, on her song, “Genesis”.

The vocals are emotive and really move you to sing, with Lucie’s angelic high registers making the bridge from verse to verse; and in the outro, as her voice gently fades out, you’ll find yourself reaching for the repeat button faster than you can consciously think about it. There is just something about her delivery and vocal style that makes this song extremely evocative, and I was left in awe.

The production is varied and very versatile, with a lot of experimental electronic elements at play, bringing together a sound that quite stands in an echelon of its own. It’s filled with easter eggs like the reversed guitar licks from time to time, and the synth pads that add a good deal of grit and saturation to the guitars that ring throughout the song, giving it a very layered sound that bleeds attention to detail and impressive choices in terms of sound design. This is all held together by a mix that brings out all the elements of the song quite beautifully.

In conclusion, I think that “As Real As Water” is a great song, and more than deserves your attention this week. Check out the song here!
