Despite the Wane’s ‘Beyond The Wall’ is a upbeat, nostalgic rock song that communicates the strength in moving through an unending, monotonous cycle. Its sound is evocative of bright, (almost) pop rock from the early 2000s while its lyrics are almost somber in tone.

‘Beyond The Wall’: Somber Reflection Wrapped in Bright Nostalgia
The song begins on what feels like an offbeat, with tremulous guitars and a vocal delivery that takes its time. The lyrics here set the somber tone for the song, with lines like “…there’s no tomorrow for me now…” The lines here betray a weariness in the song’s tone that’s found throughout.
The drums flood in at the tail end of the line “…Another new day that goes by…Another new one…”. The cascading drums help bring the song together. The vocal delivery remains a bit on the offbeat though, signalling a sort of divide in the tone. The way ‘Beyond The Wall’ comes together in these initial moments creates a unique mood throughout its soundscape. It seems to simultaneously capture the droning, fast-paced nature of mundanity.
There are a few stand-out, compelling moments in the song’s lyrics that seem to go beyond this interesting dynamic between words and sound. The line before the song’s first refrain and guitar solo, “…and it will pass and it will change…” holds a driven sort of optimism that diminishes as the song moves on. By the second refrain, the vocals are processed to sound distant as they sing, “…and it won’t pass and it won’t change…”.
The little optimism that was present in the beginning seems near gone towards the song’s end.
‘Beyond The Wall’ also has some of the smoothest guitar interludes I’ve heard. These guitar solos are satisfying and help buoy the song with some brightness and levity. All in all, this song by Despite the Wane is an poses an interesting dialogue between fast-paced mundanity and somber pessimism. It does this while also highlighting a bright nostalgia in its sound that makes helps make it an enjoyable listen.
