Let us find out what this EP has in store for the listeners.
The latest EP by mOXIE mOTIVE, ANIMOXIE: Starstone Saga – The Eternal Lives of Keket, is a psychedelic EP at its core. But the experimental characteristic is alive throughout its running time of approximately fourteen minutes. The most surprising aspect is that, even in such a short duration, it manages to capture listeners’ attention instantly and keep them engaged until the end.
In terms of instrumentation and arrangement, this EP is top-notch. The spacey synths, pulsating beats, and atmospheric elements simply make the listeners fall into a dream-like state throughout the time. Joining forces with Matthew on this EP is Stephanie Lee from Chicago. Her absolutely flawless and expressive contribution with the violin just adds more depth and heartfelt emotion to the music. Additionally, the overall production also deserves special mention. Every intricate sonic layer can be heard with utmost clarity, which is just mind-blowing.
Besides the brilliance of musical experimentation, there is also some visual artistry behind the concept of this EP. The inspiration for the concept comes from the Egyptian Goddess of Primordial Darkness, Keket. Here, the Goddess is imagined as a plasma entity. She has the power to reincarnate through time and space, preserving ancient knowledge, regenerating through pyramids, and battling both the outer demons as well as the monsters within her bloodline. Starstone Saga – the Eternal Lives of Keket is the story that depicts the journey of this Goddess through various phases.
The concept and the story are beautifully captured in the official video of the EP. It is actually an anime music video where the visuals and elements bring the whole narrative to life. If you really wish to have the best experience with this EP, it is highly recommended that you take some time out for it. When you watch the music video and listen to the tracks in there, one after the other in sequence, it will leave you completely spellbound. Scroll down to the interview, where you will find the video and also a little something about it from Matthew.
We were lucky to speak to Matthew. He was kind enough to share some details about ANIMOXIE: Starstone Saga – The Eternal Lives of Keket. So, let’s dive right into it and check out what he has to say!
1) Hello Matthew! First of all, the EP sounds great. Before we dive deeper, can you take us through how this project started and how the name mOXIE mOTIVE came about?
Matt Duhaime and I played music together since high school and formed the band. The name mOXIE mOTIVE comes from the old 1800’s Moxey drink campaign, the “one cure for all your ills.” That’s exactly how we saw the music we were making. He passed away ten years ago, and I’ve been carrying the torch ever since.
2) Since you are the main composer, producer, and recording force behind this project, let us address things one by one. We would love to learn more about the idea behind this EP. Did the music come first, or did the story gradually shape the compositions?
Music always comes to me without thinking. A lot of it from dreams, visions, the future, and that kind of space. The songs usually have double and triple meanings. For the Starstone Saga, I took my favorite tracks from last year’s EP Chakra Supernova, remixed and remastered them (I do everything myself), and set them inside a new myth I created, a hero’s journey. So on one level, the songs really are the path of the hero.
3) Please tell us about the recording process. Did you record everything together in one go, or were the tracks recorded individually and then mixed into a cohesive EP?
Stephanie Lee (Chicago) and I (Denver) record every track as close as possible to the moment of inspiration. Sometimes I literally catch it in the moment. I’m always trying to capture that raw creative spark (the muse), so listeners can feel it too. I lay down each track separately, then mix everything in Logic.
4) Now, coming to the music video, can you give us a few details about it? How did the visuals come about? Who were the creative minds behind it, and how did you bring everything together so beautifully?
The video is entirely me. I used a mix of video editing software and AI to make the visuals match the music as closely as possible. Each piece is meant to be an immersive art experience, and when you listen to the whole saga, it has the potential to take you somewhere truly beautiful.
5) Would you like to tell us about your musical influences, both in general and for this particular EP?
The Beatles, Radiohead, Portishead, Talking Heads, Pink Floyd, Broken Social Scene, NIN, Spoon, David Bowie, Tame Impala
6) Finally, what does the future look like for mOXIE mOTIVE? Is there a full-length album in progress, live gigs, or anything else you would like to share?
The next chapter, Seed Nova, is coming early 2027. It goes deeper into bass-and-drum territory, kind of like “Spoon meets Tame Impala and Hans Zimmer, dancing in a pyramid.”
