“Le Soleil Rouge”, by Ustica: A master-class in experimental electronic music

“Le Soleil Rouge”, translating into “The Red Sun”, is the title track from the album of the same name by French experimental music producer Bruno Sacco, better known by his online identity, “Ustica”. On this track, he takes us through a journey I can only describe as cosmic, and extraterrestrial– keep reading for my thoughts!

Experimental electronic music is something that I have held a fascination for, for the longest time– the kinds of textures and melodies that one can weave together in a timeless sound, unbound by genres and rhythms, have always held a special place in my listening habits; and this track is one of those. There is no set textbook rhythm for the most part, only pulses and heartbeats that fade in and out, like swallows amidst the rising sun; with a steady kick in the background serving as the sole metronome.

And around that metronome, revolve endless textures and symphonies made possible through the rich, layered synthesizers, each contributing to such a full listening experience and a full-bodied sound, I find myself walking fine line between talking about this piece in a critical, analytical light, and merely fanboying over it. There is so much to uncover, so much fascination that “Le Soleil Rouge” arouses in me, and leaves me awestruck.

The melodic base for this song revolves around plucked synthesisers that display the expertise in sound design employed by Ustica here, and in harmony with the bass, makes for a steady, relaxing listening experience that almost makes one feel like this could be the soundtrack to a modern-day space sci-fi movie– and that is high praise, indeed.

There is something about this song that just does it for me, Listening to this track is a therapeutic, rejuvenating and yet fascinating experience all in the same place– and there are very few other tracks that do this for me. I suppose one could rest assured that this track will make a part of their playlists, making appearances more than one would expect going first into it.
