Hailing from Palmer, Alaska, the John Budnik Band brings a unique blend of indie rock. Infused with the soul of influences like Jimi Hendrix, Tom Petty, and John Mayer; John Budnik, also the guitarist for Triple Black Diamonds, draws inspiration from Philip Toshio Sudo’s Zen Guitar philosophy. Anyone acquainted with zen would relate to the slogan of beginner’s mind when starting anything out. His latest title single from his third studio album, “Beginner’s Mind,” captures that feel.

Recorded in Budnik’s garage, “Beginner’s Mind” has a raw, authentic vibe. It feels polished and personal. The track opens with reverb-drenched clean guitar lines layered over acoustic rhythms. Flanger-touched guitars and light, airy vocals ease into the verses. The chorus adds a touch of soft vocal harmonies before giving way to a standout clean guitar solo that expresses feel. The second verse is followed by a delightful warm organ synth solo. Super satisfying!
By the time the track loops back to its intro section for a smooth finish, “Beginner’s Mind” leaves you with a feel good vibe. It’s the kind of feel-good indie rock tune with retrospective lyrics that sticks, reminding me of Oasis in its effortless charm. John Budnik Band has crafted a perfect slice of zen-inspired joy that’s sure to brighten anyone’s playlist.
