‘Day by the Lake’: Track-by-Track

‘Day by the Lake’(I): ‘Bad Attitude’- ‘I Don’t Want to Go to the Theatre’

‘Bad Attitude’ finds our narrator in a space that feels moody, and heady in heartache. The quiet pianos and subtle synths and later strings and flutes, feel like a reel. This clues us into our narrator’s mindset from the start. Though calm, the mood of the song feels probed at, poking at a vulnerability.

“…We try not to care, but the pain is still there.

‘Cause you’re not ready to change…”.

‘Nothing Gained, Nothing Lost’ is a subdued ballad that seems to stay stuck in this perpetual sense of isolation & loneliness. Its lyrics feel objective, making observations about someone who’s loneliness caught them almost unawares. The song’s piano, horns and strings capture this isolation, pulling the listener into that familiar static.

‘I Don’t Want to Go to the Theatre’ captures the disparities between two people who don’t seem compatible with each other. The instrumentation, with whispered vocals, strings and prominent percussion reminiscent of a Kate Bush track, captures the quiet sadness that seems to accompany this tug of realisation.

“…We were always doomed as friends…a means to an end…”.

‘Day by the Lake’(II): ‘The Hero’- ‘Day by the Lake’

‘The Hero’ is a definite highlight on the album, with its dark pianos and synths that capture this sense of gravitas and dream-like headiness. Its lyrics and mood feel dreamy, revealing this need to escape from a relationship that feels fruitless to hold on to.

Loud horns accompany the refrain where all these emotions seem to coalesce and reveal this fragile perspective.

“…Eventually you got bored and went back to the movies,…

…And the hero saves the day and (takes) all our troubles away…”.

‘I Wish You Well’ comes after this revelation, feeling like goodbye with its guitars and strings. It takes from this sense of fragility present in the last track while moving away from it. “…You sensed our time was coming to an end…Our time ended before it began…”.

Synths outline pretty melodies while our narrator finally says goodbye.

“…Now my heart is open, I wish you well…”.

The final song on the EP, ‘Day By The Lake’, is a ballad with a sure piano melody that is soft yet dynamic. We find our narrator attempting to move forward in a space that feels shared, almost stagnant. We find them urging for their now ex-lover to leave this place and all its reminders.

This while the narrator seems to stay here, static in this dynamic, kinetic space of lonely isolation. This in an attempt to move on.

“…Another day at the lake…

…Sometimes the only way is to get away…’.

This is before we loop back to the first track, with emotions and moments coming full circle.

Conclusion & The Artist

‘Day by the Lake’ by Elle follows a story of heartache from the middle. The listener feels the emotions the narrator seems to be reflecting on out of order, making the impact of those emotions feel almost fully visceral on the playback.

All this makes for a truly memorable listening experience by the end (or beginning).
