Shae Brock – Was It Real Or In My Mind? | Dreamy strings

Was It Real Or In My Mind? is a romantic indie rock album, and the artist Shae Brock is one of the biggest, brightest stars to come out of Arizona in the last few years. The album features five tracks with a total runtime of nineteen minutes and twenty-seven seconds. And all of these have unique standout elements which are all tied together beautifully with the artist’s vocal and songwriting talent.

The album Was It Real Or In My Mind

The album opens with the song Cosmic, and what else should you think of when we start talking about love? The song has a mellow beat that sets up a great stage for Shae Brock’s far-reaching vocals. Further, the softly layered electric guitar riffs across the song reach a much-awaited climax at the bridge. The result of this is an ethereal moment, and the listener can officially vouch this is a rock album indeed.

Opening with deep bass and strings, the next song Mary Jane leverages Shae Rock’s sexy, haunting voice. And the subject of this song is sweet Mary Jane, of course. However, her beauty is a cover front, there’s a lot more to the woman that you might not know about. Further, the song’s melody reminds me a touch of Billie Eilish’s No Time To Die. This is because of that slow, anticipatory vibe of the song that lends it a moodiness. And then the distorted guitar riffs and drum beats bring that out even further. There is a reason this is the most popular song from the album so far, and it’s absolutely justified.

Nestled in the middle of the tracklist is Wish. Opening acoustic, and then with an almost bluesy beat, it invites the listener to an intimate affair. By this point in the album, it is clear that this one is a very different take on Rock — without the fast-paced beats and heavy drum work. It derives its energy from the isolated instruments, each shining one at a time. This combined with the clear vocals reflects on the indie-folk influences of the musician.

Shae Brock knows that after something as gripping as the last song, the audience needs a melodic relief. So that is what she has for you next.

Dazey is a play on the word daisy, where the singer admits that many often call her by that name. This masterful song allows us to appreciate the songwriter’s ability to build a full narrative while extending playfulness to the lyrics. The shortest track on the album, this one is moody and sensual again. It also has a 2000’s pop-like rhythm which plays on the electronic production as well.

Barely enough to satisfy the heart, made love to you in my dream brings us to the close of the album. And it seems we are ending on the best note possible. This song is dreamy, and the lyrics drip saccharine with love. The electric strings are placed so romantically, and the rhythm gets you on a loop. The singer tells her lover that he does not even need to try to blow her mind — he’s already done that and he doesn’t even know.

In conclusion

Was It Real Or In My Mind? turned out to be a romantic rock affair for a Sunday afternoon. The Arizona-based singer offered me something very different from how the rock scene is developing and progressing at the moment. In that way, it was fresh and refreshing. And yet it was over too soon with only five tracks.
