‘The Game of They’ by Naylor Stone is a Rock EP that Evokes a Mood that Moves From Somewhere High & Mellow to Somewhere More Rooted and Grounded

The Game of They’ by Naylor Stone is a 6-track rock EP that seems to take us on a chill, mellow journey that showcases the artist’s versatility. The soundscape feels as though it takes us from a space that feels above the clouds to somewhere more grounded and reflective towards the end.

The lyrics through this collection muse on ambition, love, loyalty and a healthy dose of questioning authority. This while we move from mellow, sparse melodies to a reflective mood that feels grounded in its truth.

‘The Game of They’: Track-by-Track

‘The Game of They’: ‘If It Wasn’t For The Trees’- ‘Love Me, Little Lazy’

The EP begins with ‘If It Wasn’t For The Trees’, a mellow, sparse track that feels untethered almost. Its lyrics feel like stream of consciousness and distant, almost as though the narrator is in a pretty dream-like state. The track has the sense of this almost sparse depth.

This is followed by the titular track ‘The Game of They’, a bass-led track that feels a bit wonky. It’s lyrics retain the sort of abstract sentimentality from the last track but also move forward sure, with a bit of rebellious spirit.

“…Their game is one we have to play but I don’t like the game of they…”.

The song also seems to speak the distrustful, pretty much isolated state of the world that seems led through with this sense of comparison.

The third track on the EP ‘Love Me, Little Lazy’ takes on a slower, more sultry groove. Our narrator almost seems to dig up dregs in this distant yet desperate mood that feels led by the slow rhythms in the track’s soundscape. It highlights a chase, a push and pull while holding on to what seems like deep-seated pain.

“…Do you even wanna know where I’ve been?…

…Just love me lady…love me, little lazy….”.

‘The Game of They’: ‘In The Meantime’- ‘With All My Friends’

The next three tracks feel like where the themes the EP wants to explore feel more cohesive and a bit more lively. This almost feeling as though our narrator is waking up from this up-in-the-clouds, dream-like state. And now, they’re simply getting their barings, findingt their footing.

This is evident on the track ‘In The Meantime’, a reflective track that immediately feels folk-like and more lively. It begins with this optimistic leading question that seems to inform the tone of the rest of the track and the EP as a whole.

“…I like all things with the real good start and a thankful end…”.

Reflective, lively and grounded. With an abrupt ending that leads straight into ‘Top Me Up’. This track almost feels like a response to the rhetorical question that was asked in the last track, with a nice descending melody curving around the words. It seems to describe a relationship with someone who seems pretty much insatiable.

The final track on the album and a definite highlight on the EP as a whole is the grounded, triumphant ‘With All My Friends’. This track introduces darker pianos and guitars with a dramatic and dark tone. It highlights this sense of loneliness anyone would feel at the highest point of their success, while highlighting the importance of getting there with other people.

How this helps contrast that lonely feeling.

“…Living large but it ain’t quiet the same when you’re in it…

…When I got there with all my friends, we did* it…”.

*the word ‘did’ here also sounds a bit like ‘didn’t’ the seems to heighten the track’s level of intrigue.

Conclusion

‘The Game of They’ by Naylor Stone is a collection of tracks that showcase the range of emotion and versitality the artist is capable of. It showcases sparse highs before pulling us down to grounded, empowered ground.
