Nashville-based singer-songwriter, Tom Tippin has just released his sophomore album, Wasted Melodies. Delightfully melancholic and immersively emotive, the album vulnerably deals with the delicate affairs of the heart.
33 RPM blasts off the album with exploding synth ripples and a strong punching beat line. The song accumulates more and more energy as it progresses. A bejeweled electric guitar melody leads to the verse, where we are exposed to the pulsing strength of the artist’s vocals. Warm and grounded, the baritones bring out the shimmer of the synth melodies in the background. A spike in pitch lands us in a paradise of vocal play and harmonies, that is the chorus. Witnessing the collision and cooperation of all the musical elements is an absolute wonder.
The same wave of wholesome energy makes up the next song, Chance to Love You. The love song is full with teenage nostalgia. Under the growing umbrella of the vocals, we experience the sun showers and drizzles of tenderness. The artist is an incredible storyteller. We can’t help but relate and recognize the emotions that he’s singing about, all the while vibing with the popping beats and rhythm. Wonderful guitar interludes isolate the melancholy in the song before the synths are make a come back with a fresh vigor.
Acoustic strings and vocals open the next track, Heart Like Ours. Veiled rock riffs weave into the canvass, filling up the space leading up to the chorus. Blossoming falsettos illuminate the chorus as brightly as carnival lights. Accentuated with real emotions and fears, the song rings true for anyone listening. The pop track has flavors of melancholic rock flooding in any chance they get, to bring out the cynical side of the theme.
Who Am I? is the penultimate song of the album. Velvet blends of guitar and synth melodies push through the walls of euphonic bliss. The reflective sadness in the personal lyrics and emotive vocals adds a fresh flavor to the song that you want to instantly devour. Vulnerable and honest, the song brings out the anxiety and uncertainty of forging your own path and art. “Falling fast, falling short, is that what I’m made for? Will I waste a whole life asking Who I Am?”
Concluding the album, we have Jesus Christ. In this track, the artist asks for some reassurance that everything is going to be alright. Carrying forward the theme of uncertainty from the previous song, the artist directs it at the crass realities of the world and all the violence. The immersive vocals are incredibly touching and emotive. Twinkling synths filter in and out of the soundscape, as soothing harmonies resound in the background.
This sophomore EP is nothing short of divine. The innate talent of the artist blossoms out effortlessly, shining immutably for the world to see.
