Hannah Dorman – 222 | Pink Revolution

Hannah Dorman is back with her newest album, 222. The fiery Pop/Rock singer-songwriter from Surrey blends her charisma and convictions into her music to create a memorable sound. Her boldness and command over her sound is arresting and amazing to behold.

Your newest album “222” just released. What do you want your listeners to particularly look out for in it?

The lyrical content, we spent hours making sure the messages in the songs were right, we wanted to touch on topics that people could relate to in today’s society but also be uplifting and feel good too! Also there’s loads of fun ad-libs and hooks in the songs but they often take a few listens to hear so keep streaming to hear the best bits!

The album’s first song Gasoline is catchy, fun and upbeat. With pop-rap elements, tempo variations and multiple vocal and musical textures, the artist’s sass and delinquency is charming and sticks to you. With strong vocals, simple harmonies and playful beats, the song is the perfect launch into the album.

Your songs are refreshingly unpretentious, honest and personal. Can you tell us about your compositional style and your musical process in 222?

Thank you so much! I’ve always loved the female fronted pop-rock sound, I grew up listening to Avril Lavigne, Shania Twain, Kelly Clarkson and also artists like Anastacia, KT Tunstall and The Pretty Reckless who all have their own influence in my music. I wrote this EP with an Irish singer songwriter, Ivon Roberts, and we wanted to make sure every song had a strong message and the lyrical content was really meaningful. We met a producer – Sam Ray at a songwriting camp in Spain in March (2022) where we wrote ‘Gullible’. We clicked instantly and wanted to continue working together when we got home, which we did, and started working on the EP late April. The songs came together so naturally and Sam completely understood the assignment, it’s as if he could hear how I envisaged the tracks, he absolutely smashed it!

Gullible is a fast tempo song that sprints leaving a magnificent trail of high energy. A total dance fest, the song infuses an irrepressible urge to throw up your arms and mooove. The artist leverages the energy of the guitar, drums and her vocal chords to manifest a powerful vivaciousness.

What are some of the emotions/themes that you keep going back to explore and unpack with your songs?

In this EP the main message is self empowerment and self worth, learning to love yourself and really prioritising YOU. I want people to come away after listening to this EP feeling energised and ready to tackle anything!

No Boys Allowed is an empowering song that challenges the sexist narratives and conditioning surrounding relationships. The artist uses broad bass guitar rhythms and block beats to bolster and fortify her message. Lobbying for the independence that comes with the liberation of female sexuality, the song powers revolution, rebellion and reformation.

You started off your career by making acoustic covers and one was even included in Universal’s “Acoustic Hits” album! How did you transition into writing your own songs and finding your own sound?

I’ve been writing songs since I was 8, I started releasing my own music in 2010 but it has been evolving ever since. I had a band early on which I formed when I was studying music at ACM (The Academy of Contemporary Music) in Guildford, this really kicked off the pop-rock sound. More recently I’ve been dipping into the pop/EDM side of things with my single ‘Fire’ being a complete shift in genre from what people are used to hearing from me! Co-writing with Ivon and working with Sam has helped create music I’ve always wanted to create. “222” is really 15 year old Hannah’s DREAM, I’m so proud of what we’ve made!

Perfect is the fourth song of the album. Continuing the high tempo theme of the album, the song sails on the liveliness of compact drum beats and vibrant guitar work. Using synthetic vocals to create decorative harmonies, the song is another great addition to the album. The artist has a way of harnessing the energy of instruments to fit her song themes perfectly.

Can you shed a little light on what inspired the title “222” and how it ties in with the songs contained in it?

The EP is named after the angel number 222, which means you’re on the right path. Angel numbers can present themselves in many different ways, but throughout working on this EP, Ivon and I have seen ‘222’ everywhere so we thought it would be fitting to have that as the title. On the day of release I saw ‘222’ on the side of a car on TV, when I’ve been listening to the songs on the EP I look down at the timestamp and I see 2:22, I was on the radio last week and on the side of the host’s car was ‘222, 222’. These are just a few examples but it’s everywhere! So the song titles don’t necessarily directly link to the EP title, but more the creative process.

The pink revolution continues with Fire, the final song of the album. The song is a light hearted groove. With addictive vocal rhythms and modulations, the song gets on your brain and forms an electrifying circuit. Like fire, the song gets under your skin and imprints on your memory.

The fabric of the album contains beautiful sermons on blazing self-confidence, irrevocable self-love, powerful energy and inexorable strength.

You’ve been avidly recording and releasing new material this year! We’re eager to know what we can expect from you in the future.

Music music music! With a few added surprises in there if all goes to plan! My main focus at the moment is writing and releasing music as music has always been my main love and focus. We’re on a roll and can’t wait to keep going, as the phrase goes, this is just the beginning!
