Ulrich Jannert has been creating smoother music than the Jack Daniels Bicentennial bottle that generated so much hype when it came out. His songs use a simple, pop/rock build as a base and provide jazz sensibilities at no cost. By The River is no different, it is as simple as it is effective.
If you haven’t heard of him from previous singles like Dream Away for a Minute & No Time for Bad Compromises, you’re really missing an amulet in the form of song. Ulrich uses a four chord structure in this case, something we would recognize from the Green Day hit among many others. The soft saxophone creates its own rich texture as the background fades away. An odd time simple beat allows the sax to shine all the way through.
Mixing it with synth and strings, Ulrich Jannert makes sure he isn’t a one-trick pony. The sax alone has to be in virtuosic command if it has to be played at great lengths. By The River sees Ulrich add several elements and sounds but in a simple, compressed sense that make it a perfect coffee time listen.

If the music has soul, it's whole to me. The fact that my bio could have ended on a rhyme and doesn't should tell you a lot about my personality.
