Major Kami – A Better Future | Kaleidoscope Of Sounds

Canadian singer, author, composer, and musician Camille Miller aka Major Kami is based in Singapore. Other than Bowie of course, she is influenced by artists like Gorillaz and Bjork in her musical innovation. She is part of the collective named DAMde8, born in 2019, based in Bordeaux in France, and brings together around thirty people artists from different countries. The project helmed by composer and producers, Denis Expert and Dan Burkhart, has the voice and musical innovation of Major Kami in their arsenal.

Their latest single is a cover of the song A Better Future from David Bowie’s 2002 art rock album Heathen. The song was written about wanting a better world for his daughter to grow in after 9/11.

A Better Future begins with a loud siren like sound followed by sustained synth chords. These sound like church organ sounds as the vocals blaring and very subtle piano and hi-hats are in the background. The kick comes in and some electric drums programmed meant to be so I suppose enter in. We get a sound which is rooted in retro electronic music. Then as the male vocals come in we are thrown into a thatrical epic sound with a very interesting change in sound in an eclectic and progressive direction. Electronic synth lines are played over a chord progression church like a bacground. A very Bohemian Rhapsody like feel but in a classic electronic experimental pop direction.

Their previous offering Major Jones was a fitting tribute to the genius of David Bowie. Major Kami gives the song an electronic arrangement with a new twist and immense innovation. David Bowie would be proud.
