“Broken Glass” by the French Dogs takes me right back to the angst riddled pop-rock songs that dominated playlists in the 2000s. Hailing from London, the band refers to themselves as a “high velocity fixture” of the city’s indie scene and often write about the “frazzled” chaos in daily life. “Broken Glass” is their latest indie post-punk offering and also a lead up to their upcoming debut album Here’s To Pretending.
What The Song Is About
French Dogs describe their single as an “anthem of absolute devotion”. The passion is evident in the chorus lyrics: “And I would walk through broken glass, standing in the rain watch, I’ll shiver”. Delivered with a full throated belt and a natural rasp, the vocals convey an unwavering, almost sacrificial commitment. The lyrics illuminate the lengths someone would go to by juxtaposing the danger of walking through “broken glass” and the unguardedness of shivering in the rain.

What Listeners Can Expect
Musically, ‘Broken Glass’ is propelled by its jagged, interlocking melodic guitar lines which evoke the nostalgia of the 2000s post-punk era. This shifts into heavy-hitting chords that ignite a dense wall of sound in the chorus. The thick bassline and the steady drum pattern provide a relentless, rolling rhythm that anchors the track, perfectly encapsulating the grittiness and the vulnerability of this piece. The vocals remain raw and earnest throughout, channelling the angst and devotion embedded in the writing. We get a brief reprieve from the intensity during the bridge (none on the intention though). “Is it ever enough” they plead, giving us a glimpse into the hurt and insecurity lurking beneath the surface in this stripped back section. It then builds towards an explosive chorus to cement the declaration.

At its core, ‘Broken Glass’ by French Dogs is an explosive indie rock anthem of raw devotion and the angst of sacrificial love. And if anything, it also proves that their upcoming album will be un-skippable.
