“Back To Our Regularly Scheduled Programming” by D Mills Is a Groove-Heavy Blend of R&B, Hip-Hop, and Pop

Danny Mills, who records as D Mills, is a Los Angeles-based producer, artist, and session musician. He began learning music at 16, studying piano with high school teacher Dr. Gayle Serdan. Raised on a mix of hip-hop, R&B, jazz, and rock, Mills was drawn to piano as a way to compose his own ideas and to the improvisational freedom of blues and jazz. After high school, he gained experience performing live and later taught himself bass and guitar. He has since toured internationally with established and independent artists and collaborated on songwriting and recording. A great-great-grandson of blues legend Bessie Smith, Mills has released three full-length albums: The Recital, Agape, and Prism.

D Mills has released his new album, “Back To Our Regularly Scheduled Programming,” opening with “Viewer Discretion (Intro).” The track begins like a broadcast announcement, with spoken words cutting through animated synths. Its curious, shifting atmosphere feels like an invitation into the album’s own world, setting up what follows without giving too much away.

“Out of Your Mind” brings the mood down to a lighter, more relaxed groove. It’s easy to listen to, but its gentle rhythm and catchy feel make it stick. Beneath that breezy sound, the song explores the disorientation of heartbreak and abandonment. The narrator is left missing someone who’s gone and wondering whether the comfort and connection they were promised were ever genuine, or whether they misunderstood the relationship entirely.

On “Eternal Paradise,” featuring Vann, Mills leans into a sly, hypnotic mood. The track has a playful edge and a hazy, almost surreal atmosphere, as if it’s taking the listener somewhere unfamiliar. The vocal performances are a highlight, bringing character and polish to a song that feels both relaxed and irresistible.

“Let’s Get Down” keeps the album moving with a trippy, jazz-tinged R&B sound. Lighter textures give the arrangement room to breathe, while the smooth female vocals contrast beautifully with the deeper, more impassioned male delivery. The song’s rises and softer passages flow naturally, making its changing energy one of its strongest features.

The album by D Mills closes with “I Will (The Light),” a memorable finish with an upbeat, welcoming feel. A simple piano line and steady kick drum establish the groove, while Maiya Sykes brings a smooth melodic presence to the front. Mills responds with assured, polished rap verses, and the combination gives the closer an easy-to-grab hook. It’s a bright final note for an album that moves through a variety of moods and sounds.
