“Misteryosa”, by The Edralins: Post-punk-pop-rock-and-more-genres, packaged into a unique sound

The Edralins, a Filipino indie pop/rock band hailing from Baguio since 2009, began with new wave and indie folk/rock roots, evolving into dream pop and post-punk. Emphasizing strong melodies over specific genres, their influences span the Beatles to Oasis. With a discography of four studio albums, gold and platinum awards, and notable live shows, including opening for Fra Lippo Lippi, America, and more, The Edralins craft a musical palette marked by diverse sounds and iconic performances. Today, we take a look at their latest single, “Misteryosa”, and hear from the source themselves, as to what the chemistry behind this track here is. Here’s The Edralins in the studio!

From the opening, it’s evident that The Edralins know their instrumentation quite well, really. In a realm where the bass is relegated to the rhythm-keeper, and the low-end filler in a song, on “Misteryosa”, it rings front and centre, and the magic going on with the bass yields this song quite the punch and jive that I cannot fathom could’ve been substituted with anything else. The vocals sit like butter cream frosting on top of cake, and the rest of the ensemble, like the keys and the drums, stay tight in key with one another.

The middle of the song is marked by an absolutely infectious bassline that makes the interlude, releasing all the tension and letting all of the elements make their way back into the mix, and the way it’s done, is quite delicious. The mix plays a rather important part in holding all of these elements together, and it does not disappoint, especially with keeping the dynamics and the energy congruent with the theme of the song, and the result is an easy-on-the-ears treat to listen to, that is sure to warrant a second listen from the moment you first kick it on.

Here’s The Edralins talking about “Misteryosa”!

What inspired you to write this song?
I thought of writing this song, because of the reality that is happening in this world. With the passage of time, the rotation of the world sometimes or usually in human life this happens. The loss of hope, victim of the word that was hoped for or promised that was not fulfilled. Humanity is inspiring in itself. Whenever I write, it feels natural and just right. The creative process is different for anyone. Follow your path wherever it leads.

What is the meaning behind the song?
It is derived from different aspects in human life. Be it in love life, politics, work, relatives, friends or religions. That’s where the story of the song MISTERYOSA runs.

What was the songwriting process like for this song?
The process of me writing this song. First of all is what is the topic of the story, next is the melody along with my guitar playing and that’s where I will match every developing idea and words that will fit the song and tone.

What are you most proud of about the song?
I’m proud of how this song turned out. The melody that carries each verses, refrains, and choruses. Not a second was wasted in this song.

What do you hope listeners take away from the song?
I feel as a listener to this song as well. Maybe they will notice that in the first verse it’s like they’re just telling a story, when the refrain and chorus come in they’ll be startled and they’ll understand the story’s content even more.

How does the song fit into the overall concept of the album?
I have a lot of confidence in this song. This is one of the things that will be brought when the album is made.

What are some of the challenges you faced while writing and recording the song?
As an independent artist (band). It is a big challenge for us how we can promote it on other social media and digital platforms. So we made sure and studied this song carefully so that the listeners whether young or old, would like it.

What are your plans for the future of your work? Do you plan on collaborating with other artists?
We intend to finish our 5th album in the year 2024 in the month of May. Maybe right now we don’t want to be with or collaborate on future plans. But if anyone wants to join us, our door is open for this good project.
