“Work Your Stuff” by naked eye: Experimental, electronic, eclectic

One of the most challenging aspects of talking about music is to do it when it is presented to you as is– with nothing to go on about the possible background of the artist or mind that made it, or anything of the sort; it, to somebody that loves talking about music, presents a bit of a challenging, puristic proposition. That being said, when I listened to “Work Your Stuff” by naked eye, I immediately felt thoughts formulating in my head. Keep reading for them!

Everything about this track is unconventional– the fact that it starts with a lot of energy, with very unconventional percussion that somehow still works well with the low-end, the club-friendly dynamics of the song; all of it. The drums are an eclectic mix of reggae, dancehall and pop, with focus on the kick and the low-end, with the snare hits serving as the top-end flair to the beat, holding it all together while the vocals take the centre stage.

Take centre stage, the vocals do; with layered, thick harmonies that sound superbly well-glued together, with it particularly shining through in what vaguely resembles a hook on “Work Your Stuff”, while the main vocals waft from left to right in the stereo field, by virtue of some clever mixing going on here. The vocals are assisted by pads and a persistent piano that rings through the duration of the song, with some retro-futuristic 80s-sounding synths forming a nice counter-melodic element, come the outro. The whole song left me feeling a multitude of different emotions, however firmly centred around uptempo, upbeat, and happy– which, I suppose, is the purpose of the song. Mistake me not, though, I enjoyed it thoroughly for as long as the song ran– and then some, as I found myself reaching for the loop button.

The mix is unconventional, and unabashedly experimental in its outlook– with things that constantly challenge conventions beyond the textbook; while the low-end remains firmly in the centre, the whole of the rest of the spectrum floats on a cloud, entertaining your ears with endless candy the first chance it gets– and I, was left a fan.

In conclusion, “Work Your Stuff” represents a great example of what it is to experiment in production, and it leaves the product sounding rather positively interesting. Check out the track here!
