Spyderhuff’s “Sometimes” Is a Sunlit Five-Track Ride Through Bluesy Retro Rock and Playful Experimentation

Spyderhuff is a swampy, grease-soaked blues‑rock outfit forged in Detroit’s musical furnace. They love to twist and fuse genres the way Motown craftsmen bent metal, taking elements from jazz‑fusion, hard rock, funk, and raw blues and reshaping them into something gritty and alive. Most members grew up together in the Detroit area, cutting their teeth in late ’60s and early ’70s bands, so their sound carries decades of shared history and chemistry. The core lineup features Tom Kuhr (vocals, guitar, harmonica, sax, synth), Don Beyer (bass, synth), Jim Pauli (drums), Joey Gaydos (guitar), and Tony Mitchell (congas, bongos, drums, backing vocals).

Spyderhuff return with “Sometimes,” a five-track EP that nods to classic retro rock while keeping a playful, modern edge. The record opens with the title track “Sometimes,” which eases in on melodious keys and well-placed upbeat rhythms before blossoming into a full-bodied retro-rock banger. The song carries just enough head-banging energy to keep the pulse alive without drowning out its tuneful, melodic core. Vocals are raw but controlled, delivering emotional punch and charismatic swagger.

“Rha-Who-Dum” slows the pace and leans into a deeper, more chaotic mood. It’s defiantly fun and rebellious. Less serious, more joyful mayhem, showcasing the band’s willingness to let loose and not take themselves too seriously.

“Don’t Do It” by Spyderhuff brings unexpected funk to the EP. Slick beats, electronic flourishes, and teasing textures create a flirty atmosphere, and the recurring saxophone fills add vintage charm. The riff section around 1:30 is a standout moment. It has this “oh wow” injection of groove and inventiveness. This track’s instrumental confidence makes it one of the EP’s highlights.

“Saddle Up,” which closes the EP, is pure, carefree vitality. It blends rock and funk with toe-tapping rhythms and a sunlit mood that makes you want to smile and move. The vocal performances brim with passion and personality, while the riffs and dynamic guitar work provide satisfying ebbs and flows that keep the momentum fresh. Percussive details, claps, bongos, and congas, add color and a tactile warmth to the arrangements.

Across Sometimes, Spyderhuff display an impressive command of tone and texture: tight songwriting, spirited performances, and production choices that amplify rather than obscure the melodies. The EP is a joyous journey back to a retro-rock sensibility, updated with modern grooves and playful experimentation. It’s bright, energetic, and full of life.
