“Something For You”, by Early Ettringite Formation: A fun blend of pop and funk!

EEF (Early Ettringite Formation) is a quintet of young musicians from Italy– and they’ve been steadily forging their path in the world of music with their distinct grooves that they christen “a combination among high-impact Rock, sophisticated Jazz language and the groove of funk”. On their latest single, “Something For You”, what’s the something they have for us? Keep reading for my thoughts!

There’s just something about the combination of funk with jazz that strikes one as effortlessly sophisticated and elegant– and coupled with the more fun, uptempo take that EEF bring to the table on “Something For You”, it’s quite the well-executed pull-off; from the deep, layered song structure to the actual execution, there’s a certain X-factor to this track that seems hard to pinpoint at first, but you know it’s there– but ten seconds in, you know it; and you begin to live it.

The clean guitar picking effortlessly changes in dynamic to accommodate the various meter changes and the style evolution throughout “Something For You”– and so does the drumming; both coming together to create this easy-flowing, idyllic feeling that swoops you off your feet and seemingly relentlessly holds you in the air for the entirety of the track– and that’s quite saying something! The drumming retains machine-like precision with some of the best fills and swing experiments I’ve come across yet, and it blends seamlessly into the rest of the production to create a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

Of course, such great execution, and one’s wary of the ears at the actual studio– but I’m glad to report that the mix and master, too, have been handled with poise and candour on “Something For You”. There is excellent control in dynamics– an essential for this style of music– and the vocals retain their high-spirited, cheerful energy throughout the track’s runtime.

Overall, there’s nothing I’d wish was done differently about “Something For You” by EEF– it’s as close to perfection as one can get, just the way it is. Enthusiastic two-thumbs-up recommendation! Check out the track here:
