Song Atmosphere
‘Oh Lover’ starts with gorgeous folksy instrumentation, and is accompanied almost immediately by emotive, slow singing. We are introduced to the two narrators of the song, sung by the two singers in their distinct voices. The two sing one after the other, as though presenting two sides of a relationship on the brink of heartbreak. When their voices meet, the beauty of the synchrony is tear-worthy. The song scratches an itch in your brain you never knew you had. The instruments take a back seat as soon as the vocals truly take off, forming the perfect stripped backing that allows the soulful singing to be the main event.

The pain of an impending heartbreak is captured meticulously in the song. Both parties are crushed, and terrified. Yet it’s like there’s nothing neither of them can do anymore except beg each other to ‘lay it bare’. They want to change the world for each other. Neither of them wants to be alone, or wants the other to be alone. Still — here they are, and they transport the listeners right there with them.
