“Giving Up”, by The Gerry Farrow Band: Nostalgic, poignant rock!

The Gerry Farrow Band, led by UK-based singer-songwriter Gerry Farrow, brings a fresh yet nostalgic sound reminiscent of Crowded House and Fleetwood Mac. Originally from Oldham and now residing in the East Midlands, Gerry’s musical journey includes founding Northern Quarter and Monochrome Days — and on their latest album, “Giving Up”, they bring us a fresh, exciting sound. The opener to this 3-track EP is the title track — and right from the start, you’re settled into a sedate, laid-back pace, soundtracked by Gerry’s soulful, melodious vocals. With a tinge of nostalgia and melancholy that rings through the song, “Giving Up” is quite the poignant number to start the EP off with; and with the drumming and the basses closely soundtracking the vocals and keeping things grounded, this listen grows on you, and it does so rather quickly.

Segueing into the second track on “Giving Up”, “Be Someone Else” takes the pace up by a notch for a bit more uptempo an affair. Gerry’s vocals stay just as powerful through this one as well, with the guitar playing in this song creating nice aspects of melody and harmony; and all in all, “Be Someone Else” is also well-executed in its outlook and delivers its message nicely.

The EP comes to a close with “All The Misfits”, a very placid, idyllic number that settles the listener into a trance, almost, with the gentle instrumentation in the background, and the heartfelt, soulful vocals that leave a deep impact. The message for this EP is one of poignance, one of reflection, and one of nostalgia — and all three of the tracks capture that rather beautifully.

All in all, “Giving Up”, by The Gerry Farrow Band – a collection of songs that tug unabashedly at your heartstrings; and with solid mixes and production, do so with polish and punch. Take a listen to the album here!
