Bjartmar – Danger Zone | Sombre/Calm

If you’ve ever explored the dark electro-pop genre, you’ve possibly heard moderately paced EDM tracks with a subtle gloominess in them. However, Icelandic artist, Bjartmar, has created a track that’s both calm and dark – featuring unique beats, hypnotic melodies and melodious synths. Aptly named “Danger Zone”, the track has a very melancholic sound to it that’s quite striking.

The song starts off with simple melodies being played on the bass and some synths, which support Bjartmar’s mesmerizing vocals. Lush harmonies accompany the lead vocal melody, giving it some depth, as the track progresses to a slightly more upbeat rhythm comprising of a deep kick and a subtle snare. Initially, the beats are a bit mellow and can be heard only in the background, giving a lot of space for the layered vocals to shine through.

What’s interesting about “Danger Zone” is that Bjartmar begins singing from a place that’s a bit low-spirited, until the chorus, where there’s a kind of calming feel that come from the elements of synth-pop that are introduced. His lyrics fit in nicely over the emotive chord progressions, where he sings about how he’d like to have a chance in the “danger zone” with a certain someone. Using smooth transitions and bright synthesizer melodies, the track has been arranged in an appealing way, creating a very impactful and enjoyable final chorus.

“Danger Zone” is a part of Bjartmar’s upcoming EP, “Secondhand Dream”. Best known for his collaborative project “Broken” with artist Bistro Boy, he mainly focuses on fusing retro electronics with modern elements in his own style to create his signature sound.
