UK Country music artist Jackson Lake recently came out with a successfully crowdfunded album called ‘Lost & Found.’ Known best for fusing contemporary and classic country styles in his songs, the Leeds-based singer-songwriter has been an avid performer for over twenty years and has released a constant stream of well-received singles and EPs since. His latest record showcases 12 emotional tracks that tell the story of his introspective journey through love and heartbreak.
Lost & Found Album Tracklist
The album is introduced with a beautiful guitar-driven song called Country To Me. Lake’s vocals shine amid smooth guitar riffs and tight drum rhythms as he sings about the most cherished aspects of ‘home’. “This is where my feet touch the ground This is where my heart will always be found “.
Lake goes on to say that life keeps moving and is quite unpredictable on the next track – The Space In Between. He sings over a guitar progression that supports his powerful country-toned vocals well. According to Lake, if we continue doing what we’re supposed to do and keep ourselves happy, someday, somewhere, you’ll get to cross paths with that special someone in that ‘space’ in between – a brilliantly written song with infectious and engaging melodies!
Take Comfort begins with an upbeat drum rhythm and some folksy tunes, reminiscent of Celtic music. While country music is originally from southern America, it has made its way to the UK thanks to more concerts over the past few decades, and artists such as Lake have kept the cowboy vibe alive! On track three, he shares a composition of classic county rhythms with a modern touch that makes it all the more engaging and appealing.
What’s great about this album so far is how versatile the songs are. Lake tastefully combines elements of rock and pop in his songs and What Would You Say? is a great example. Over familiar four-chord progressions and lively drums, Lake sings a love song expressing his desires through poetic lyricism. The addictive melodies and awesome dynamics make this one of those tracks that you just can’t get out of your head!
Lake mellows things down a tad with the next song – Except For Blue. The slow-paced drums support his delicate vocals on this track excellently where he sings a melancholic tune, reminiscing about the past and learning from his journey -“I find myself running through the dark/Still learning how to walk/Blinded by the light from you/I saw all the colours of my rainbow except for blue”.
Drive Away starts off in a somewhat dark space with an evil laugh sound introducing reverb-drenched guitars and vocals. The simple two-chord progression paves way for an extravagant chorus that changes the mood of the song to a more optimistic and uplifting one. Once again, Lake’s heartfelt writing comes through on this track. “I could punch the walls or drink alone/But there just ain’t enough whiskey in this town/So I drive away/Find my road to nowhere/Turn around and come back again.”
Probably the most popular track out of the lot, and the most upbeat song so far. With gritty vocals and grungy tones, Lord Don’t Let Me Fall brings back the groovy sounds of country-rock. Lake’s extraordinary composition blends gospel-esque lyrics with banging rock rhythms in this energetic three-minute-long track.
For those of you familiar with Lake, Shot In The Dark might remind you of the raw country sounds from his 2018 album ‘This Is How It Feels’. The guitar-driven acoustic track is an ode to a loved one and is quite easy-on-the-ears – a nice change of pace after the previous track. It makes for an excellent rainy-day song with its soothing instrumentation and mellow tones!
Another excellently written love song on the list – All We Need Is A Road. Seems like Lake went for a Jason Aldean-like sound for this one! With smooth guitars, expressive vocals and a solid drum rhythm, the track shares the artist’s message of hope. “We can be anything we want to be/Anywhere you wanna go/All we need is a road”.
Walk The Long Way Home begins with a vibrant blend of strings, banjos, guitars and drums. Lake’s vocals are supported by a simple guitar melody as follows the theme – “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. It’s a bit odd how the lyrics are really encouraging but follow a slightly melancholic tune throughout the track. Yet another interesting and engaging track by the masterful songwriter!
There is a fascinating mix of instruments and textures on this album that makes each song stand out and tell Lake’s story in a special way. Intimate songwriting can create a space that’s heartwarming and inviting, and Green Light does just that. His favourite guitars and grunge tones play hopeful melodies that continue the story he began in All We Need Is A Road. Lake has finally found the road that takes him home and is overjoyed after having survived the bumpy ride so far. – “Give me a green light/On a blue sky/And a burning flame behind your eyes/A fallen star and a wandering heart/Will walk you home when it gets dark”.
“Lost & Found’ comes to an end with Let Me Down Easy, which sound like Lake’s final request to his significant other. It begins with a wide synth arpeggio and it seems a bit bizarre considering the sounds on the album so far. As Lake’s vocals are accompanied by dreamy guitar tones and piano, the track gradually takes on a nostalgic feel, culminating with catchy hooks and harmonies that are sure to get you singing along!
