Sunrise State of Mind opens on gentle piano before steady percussion sets in, while the subtle guitar twangs in the background make it sound like catching the first light of day on a quiet farm, somewhere near an old barn.

It sounds sweet and simple, like waking up early, making the softest, fluffiest pancakes for breakfast, opening the windows, and suddenly finding some energy for life again. “Everything got canceled…It’s time to play,” turns what could have been a disappointing day into an unexpected chance to enjoy yourself.

The lyrics keep using morning as a way of talking about starting over. “Today’s an open book…Let’s read the page,” makes the morning feel completely untouched, while, “there’s a poem in the air,” gives everything around you a little more magic. “Light, rising in the east…Breaking shadows in the west,” becomes a way of leaving the darker parts of yesterday behind, with light slowly taking over the shadows.

Finally, Sunrise State of Mind feels like a morning that you do not want to rush through. The light filters in through the windows, a warm mug of coffee, and there is nowhere else you need to be. It is just you, the morning, and a little more life.
