‘Clarinet Sonata “Whiteout”’ by Klein & Jamison (et la) is a Four-Track Instrumental Odyssey

Clarinet Sonata “Whiteout”’ is a four-track clarinet and piano instrumental collaboration between Jim Klein, Ian Jamison, Peter Stoll & Adam Żukiewicz. Each track on the album captures moods that flow through subtle shifts, while evoking a specific location and its elements.

The clarinet and piano in each track flit through each track in well-articulated duets. This giving each instrument moments to shine up and down the scale.

‘Clarinet Sonata “Whiteout”’: Track-by-Track

The EP begins with ‘I.Chasm Lake’ a track that introduces our main instruments in a cascading, flowing dynamic. The clarinet holds center stage, flitting over melodies while our piano keeps those flowing melodies tethered to some sort of bass-line. In these few minutes, the piano becomest the lake our clarinet melodies float upon.

Relaxing, mysterious, calm and playful.

‘II.Above the Clouds’ captures lonely clarinet melodies as they float up high. This while pianos begin to trickle by, like footsteps. Soft at first, but soon deep and sweet. Now, the two instruments begin to push and pull, with out pianos push to ground while our clarinets pull to float.

‘III.Whiteout’ captures our floating clarinet in a deep spiral, before those melodies begin to drag in a long, dragging lament. Now, the clarinet melodies attempt to pull themselves downward, while our light and dark piano melodies push and pull to bring those clarinet melodies to the surface.

Light, lilting pianos pulls the clarinet up, while deep pianos push to locate the clarinet’s deep melodies, digging deep beneath the surface.

The last song on the EP, ‘IV.the Parking Lot’ captures simple clarinet & piano melodies with this tinge of melancholy. Here, the piano melodiessound deep while the clarinet melodies seem proactive. Here, all the melodies seem solid and secure, making for a brick solid resolution for the EP’s main themes.

Each track on ‘‘Clarinet Sonata “Whiteout”’ by Stoll, Klein, Jamison & Żukiewicz seems to capture a journey that at first was light before becoming a fight. A fight for survival and digging out of the rubble/snow after an avalanche. Each instrument goes from light, almost floaty places to deep, dark ones, with this sense of pressure pressing down.

The EP is a moving collection of tracks that gives space for & articulately communicates a experience that feels terrifying.
