AtteroTerra delivers brutal death and black metal with latest EP, “Guillotine”

AtteroTerra is the force the world needs to feel right now. A one-man project that gives the force of 100, every track has a brutal strength that can shake the very face of the Earth. This holds true especially for the forces that oppress and divide. Sharp, political and layered in the right essence, this is one thrash/death metal band that can make a difference with just the power of observation and melody. This is their latest EP, Guillotine

As a theme, it’s very clear what this album is talking about. Through history, an arbitrary government has been brought down by taking its leader to the guillotine. It represents stark change, an end to abusive intolerance and hate. After the PSA of State of Emergency, The Worst is Yet to Come arrives. The tone and riff demolish the silence to craft the detonator box that has been building for so long. From the diabolical vocals to the instrumentation being surgical, this is the perfect start to an album like this. It is intense that Travis has been able to compose every single aspect of the song while not losing out on the quality of the grooves.

For those like me who don’t know what Hirudinea means, it’s ‘leech’. This is apt for the politics of not only the States but also globally, where governance seems to be taking advantage of hate that is pollinating rapidly. The drums and guitar tone on this were absolutely breathtaking and are delivered with bullet-strafing energy. Plaguebringer comes immediately after.

Death metal cutting the silence

The time signatures bounce around during the verse with instrumental mastery, while vocals and chorus sections are blood-curdling. AtteroTerra is the kind of band you look forward to returning to a genre you feel is saturated with the same kind of compositions. I loved the vocal register and tone of Travis Perry’s vocals. The gentleman has understood where to channel all his fury, and the result is a glorious headbanging experience.

The way this project blends death, groove, black and doom metal is powerful. No two songs follow the ominous essence of only listening to one note. Malfeasant showed AtteroTerra in a whole other light, with a demonic bass line opening the song and chaos ensuing in the background. It’s almost like finding an entrance pass into a rung of hell, entering into Godking immediately after. It shows the prevalence of an overlord that has to be brought down. The vocal snippet of “…you are no king” will ring in my head, tied to certain visuals, forever. It is a memorable closer to an EP that remains relevant and honest and a reflection of how we’re viewing authority in society and where we’ll fall behind. Head-straight to the guillotine:
