‘Rust Mountain’: Latest Single From Aptøsrs Reimagined In Monochrome Piano

‘Rust Mountain (Monochrome Piano Version)’ is an evocative monolithic arrangement by British composer and producer Paul Terry. An acclaimed producer with over 600 tracks in his discography, Aptøsrs (pronounced “Apatosaurus”) is his latest instrumental post-rock project. As Aptøsrs, he crafts emotional soundscapes with cinematic production, and ‘Rust Mountain’ is one such composition.

The Monochrome Approach

This version of ‘Rust Mountain’ is not merely a piano cover; it is a “monochrome” edition of the original inspired by the “minus colour” version of the ‘Godzilla Minus One’ soundtrack and thus, takes on a life of its own. Aptøsrs strips away the dense mountain of synths and percussion to reveal a more raw, architectural core where the piano is treated like a percussive element. Thus, the piece retains the initial cinematic gravity by making use of the piano’s heavy, percussive strikes in the lower registers.

Creating Depth

Moreover, Aptøsrs’ meticulous production imbues this track with a sprawling negative space. This means that it also treats the silence between the notes with the same importance as the melody itself, making the composition feel just as expansive as the initial version. In doing so, the production highlights the subterranean depths of the piano to ensure that the song retains its essence. Ultimately, all of these production choices transform the previous external, industrial intensity into something with internal introspective weight.

All in all, ‘Rust Mountain (Monochrome Piano Version)’ is a reimagining that not only honours the original version but also manages to evoke entirely different emotions and narratives. It showcases Aptøsrs’ skill as a producer because it is a rare feat to strip away the industrial-sounding pulse of the song and still land on a composition just as visceral. It goes to show that a piece can be powerful in just monochrome.
