“Alone On Christmas Day”, by The High Plains Drifters: Soft, holiday rock

The High Plains Drifters are a pop rock outfit that came out with their debut album in 2019– and ever since, they’ve been perfecting their sound, moving steadily into a new-wave sound that incorporates smart use of synths, as well as a steadily increasing energy through all of their work. On their latest single, “Alone On Christmas Day”, how do they fare? Keep reading for my thoughts!

The song has a remarkable easy-listen attitude to the execution that is apparent from the first measure– the gentle drumming, the soft synths in the background courtesy of Charles Czarnecki– all coming together to yield quite a pleasant listening experience that leaves a lasting impact. The acoustic guitar and swinging beat contribute a soft yet tense dynamic, while the vocals exhibit cool confidence and dominance, further enhancing the song.

Unconventional vocals, snippy synths, high-energy percussion, and vibrant yet melancholic themes converge on “Alone On Christmas Day” to make it into quite something– with the subtle humour in the lyrics blending quite well with the vocal style, as well, contributing to a coherent sound.

One of the song’s standout features is the well-rounded mix, skillfully balancing the main instrumental components with subtle elements that contribute to its depth. Larry Studnicky’s warm and urgent lead vocal takes center stage, infusing the track with engaging emotion and resonance, making it a memorable addition to any holiday playlist.

In conclusion, “Alone On Christmas Day” is as good an addition one can make to their holiday playlists this season. Check out the song here!
