Introducing Голос КАА, previously associated with the Saint Petersburg-based dark jazz project Fugu Quintet. Currently residing in Singapore, he has transitioned his artistic focus towards various hip-hop genres and sub-genres. Experimenting with sound design techniques, he makes light work of bringing in innovative soundscapes– all highlighted on his latest single, “Сквозь тернии к страху”– keep reading for my thoughts!
“Сквозь тернии к страху” is part of an EP titled OP-1 by Голос КАА, named so after its use of the OP-1 synthesizer, known for its gritty bass undertones and bit-crushed retro-inspired style that lends itself quite beautifully to the song. With its potent low-end and atmosphere tones right from the very start, it evolves quite nicely into an almost gospel-like sound at the end and is successful in creating just the right vibe for the listener.

The rhymes, while completely in Russian, still sit well together in a Western hip-hop style, and do so even better with an underground, downtempo hip-hop sound such as this one. There is no doubt about the free flow of the track in terms of its rhymes and flows, accentuated even so further by the use of clever ad-libs, both melodic and rhythmic on “Сквозь тернии к страху”.
The production, as alluded to earlier, is based on the OP-1 synthesizer, and the sound is evident; but what is more impressive is the seamlessness of execution. Every sound seems to work with one another rather nicely and smoothly, contributing excellently to the vibe of the track. The vocal layering also earns some commendation for when there is some power needed in the lyrics, and the vocal layers here do far from disappoint, with great mixing and mastering, too, playing quite the pivotal role.

All in all, “Сквозь тернии к страху”, by Голос КАА– it is an energy-filled, downtempo hip hop that manages to strike just the right amount of aggression so as to not raise any questions. Check out the track here!
