Godzilla in the Kitchen Revamp Modern Metal with 'Birdsong' - Interview

Godzilla in the Kitchen is a 3-piece metal band known for their progressive rock and psychedellic influences with atmoshperic melodies and powerful vocals. Their recent release “Birdsong“ shows the emotionally expansive side of the band, building from melancholic verses into an explosive, anthemic hook.

Lyrically, the song explores growth, regret and the question of whether we sometimes need to change instead of simply accepting every part of ourselves.

“Birdsong“ is the third single from the upcoming album “Termination Sequence“. We recently interviewed the band, here’s what they had to say:

1. Your latest track beautifully blends the intense psychedelic rock energy with metal-driven hooks, creating a stunning gothic vibe. Where do you draw inspiration from, to create such innovative, artsy, avant-garde music?

First of all, thank you for calling it “beautiful”—that’s quite a compliment. We draw our inspiration from a wide variety of sources. Musically, all three of us have different backgrounds, so we create a fusion of various musical styles—from rock and metal to forró and funk, as well as influences from pop music. In the case of our current single, “Birdsong,” it’s a song that serves as an emotional outlet. Often, it’s not necessarily the beautiful, relaxed times in life that compel you to process them in songs. In this case, it was unbearable interpersonal complications and the resulting realization that you have to change yourself to free yourself from that situation.

Musikalisch sind wir alle drei unterschiedlich geprägt und bilden so eine Fusion aus verschiedensten Musikstilen, von Rock und Metal über Forró und Funk bis hin zu Einflüssen aus der Pop-Musik. Im Falle unserer aktuellen Single Birdsong handelt es sich um einen Song, der als emotionales Ventil dient. Oft sind es nicht unbedingt die schönen, entspannten Zeiten im Leben, die einen dazu zwingen, sie in Songs zu verarbeiten. In diesem Fall waren es unerträgliche zwischenmenschliche Komplikationen und die daraus erwachsende Erkenntnis, dass man sich selbst verändern muss, um sich aus dieser Situation zu befreien.

2. How do you aim to utilise the art of music to the benefit of your listeners? Do you think that music has some special purpose?

Without getting too carried away: First of all, we obviously want to entertain people with our music. Anyone who feels swept up by a groove or enchanted by a melody is warmly invited to dance with us and listen to the songs over and over again. In our songs, we explore themes and emotions that are on our minds, and we’re pretty normal people (except for Thiago—he’s the drummer). So we have to expect that the themes we address in our songs also resonate with other people and might therefore help others feel, at the very least, seen (or heard).

Um mal nicht zu hoch zu stapeln: Zum einen möchten wir natürlich mit unserer Musik unterhalten. Jeder der sich von einem Groove gepackt oder von einer Melodie bezaubert fühlt, ist herzlich dazu eingeladen mit uns zu tanzen und die Songs hoch und runter zu hören. Wir verarbeiten in unseren Songs Themen und Emotionen die uns beschäftigen und wir sind ziemlich normale Menschen (außer Thiago, der ist Schlagzeuger). Wir müssen also damit rechnen, dass die Themen, die wir in unseren Songs verarbeiten, auch andere Menschen beschäftigen und somit vielleicht dazu beitragen können, dass andere Menschen sich mindestens gesehen (oder gehört fühlen).

3. Tell us about your favorite project that you have worked on so far.

Definitely the current album. Musically, we’re breaking completely new ground here thanks to the lyrics and the resulting change in our songwriting process. It was very exciting, thrilling, stressful, exhausting—and a ton of fun. Doing the same thing over and over again, writing the same songs again and again—that’s just not our style. The Termination Sequence project isn’t over yet; the album’s release is just around the corner, and then the release tour will follow—we’re really looking forward to it!

Ganz klar das aktuelle Album. Wir betreten hier musikalisch absolutes Neuland durch die Texte und den dadurch veränderten Songwriting-Prozess. Es war sehr spannend, aufregend, stressig, anstrengend und hat extrem viel Spaß gemacht. Immer wieder dasselbe machen, dieselben Songs nochmal schreiben, dass liegt uns nicht. Das Projekt Termination Sequence ist noch nicht vorbei, der Release des Albums steht kurz bevor und dann folgt die Release Tour, wir haben Bock!

4. What is the idea behind “Godzilla in the Kitchen”. How would you introduce your art to a first time listener?

Music doesn’t have to be boring. Time and again, it’s striking how people tend to pander to their own memories, releasing the same song over and over with just a slightly different arrangement. We’ve made it our mission to simply try out everything that feels right. At the same time, we’re committed to making sure the music is accessible. Of course, you can “reinvent the wheel” with noise and extreme metal, but then the songs quickly lose their accessibility.

Musik muss nicht langweilig sein. Immer wieder fällt auf, dass der Mensch gern sein Gedächtnis beklatscht und immer wieder der selbe Song mit etwas anderer Umsetzung veröffentlicht wird. Wir haben uns vorgenommen, einfach alles auszuprobieren, was sich richtig anfühlt. Wir haben gleichzeitig den Anspruch, dass die Musik hörbar sein soll. Man kann natürlich mit Noise und Extreme Metal “das Rad neu erfinden”, aber die Songs verlieren dann schnell ihre Hörbarkeit.

5. Every artist aims for that feeling of soul-satisfaction, fulfillment, and a sense of achievement after creating every art piece. If they don’t get it, they consider their efforts futile. How do you know the music you have created is of value and substance?

In fact, we often don’t really realize it until we’re on stage with the new material. You can often see it in people’s faces, and then you find out for sure after the show when you talk with the audience. You can tell if you’ve struck a chord and if people have gotten the message. That’s the best feeling—an attentive audience that makes it clear after the concert that they’ve understood it. Of course, we’re also thrilled when we realize that lots of people are listening to our songs regularly, and when friends and acquaintances reach out in the first few days because a song moved them. But the true test of the songs happens live.

Tatsächlich merken wir das oft erst wirklich, wenn wir mit dem neuen Material auf der Bühne stehen. Oft sieht man es schon in den Gesichtern und dann erfährt man es nach dem Auftritt im Dialog mit dem Publikum. Man merkt, ob man einen Nerv getroffen hat und ob die Menschen die Nachricht erhalten haben. Das ist das beste Gefühl. Ein aufmerksames Publikum, das nach dem Konzert deutlich macht, dass sie es verstanden haben. Natürlich freuen wir uns auch riesig, wenn wir merken, dass viele Menschen dauerhaft unsere Songs hören und auch wenn Freunde und Bekannte sich in den ersten Tagen melden, weil ein Song sie berührt hat. Die wahre Prüfung der Songs geschieht aber Live.

6. If there could be one thing you can share with your listeners about your art or yourself, what would that be?

Be honest. Be honest with yourselves, be honest with others. Don’t try to follow some trend or join some movement in the hope that you’ll lose yourselves in it. Just be honest. And, of course, listen to our new album. That’s the most honest thing you can do.

Seid ehrlich. Seid ehrlich zu euch selbst, seid ehrlich zu anderen. Versucht nicht mit irgendwelchen Trends mitzulaufen oder euch irgendeiner Bewegung anzuschließen, in der Hoffnung dass ihr darin aufgeht. Seid einfach ehrlich.Und hört natürlich unser neues Album. Das ist das ehrlichste was man machen kann.
