‘Tears of the Sea’: Track-by-Track

‘Tears of the Sea’: ‘My Dream’ – ‘Ocean Stream’

We begin with the haunting, almost unsettling calm of ‘My Dream’. Its soundscape resembles that of a self-help tape, with lyrics that guide us through a space that feels almost eerie in its calm. This track introduces us to the album’s expansive, dissonant calmness.

“…You are alone…”.

This calm seamlessly transitions to the expansiveness of ‘Ship’. A slow, almost wistful track led by string, piano and guitar melody, the song pulls you into its close to uncomfortable yet liberating sound. The track’s lyrics ache for escape, while its almost bright melodies keep us suspended in the song’s rhythm.

All while the narrator is “…waiting for the ship to take me away…”.

‘Dominos’ plucks its way towards calm, with mysterious melodies that evoke calm dissonance. The lyrics and sound seem to be at odds, as the narrator wants to leave while the soundscape’s rhythms beg to stay. “…I cannot stay, I have to go away…”.

‘Pieces’ attempts to pull together memories, while its melodies subtly expand and make space for the pieces that float in to settle through the song. The narrator means to find their sense of themselves, hoping to find equilibrium, balance and “…home again…”

They’re on a winding, cascading road towards healing.

‘Ocean Stream’ retains that settled calm, hard-won with expansive melodies and lyrics that seem to flow into eachother. Its mood acknowledges what it know, in a way that feels ethereal and in turn immerse. “…I know you from the ocean stream…”.

Something about the track seems to pull from this almost dream-like quality.

‘Tears of the Sea’: ‘The Sailor’ – ‘In the Dark Water’

‘The Sailor’ seems to take on a tone of trepidation that almost seems to fall in  endless cascades. It’s a track that acknowledges change, something that feels as tremulous as the changing tide during a storm. “…The signs in the sky seem to change with the tides…”.

But in that, there’s this tone of surrender and solidarity in its lines. Almost asif to say, “you are not alone”, “…I’m falling with you…”.

‘The Chase’ pools in this ethereal sound, expansive and magnetic. This with subtle percussion that seems to beckon us, narrator and listener alike towards what feels like a simple yet profound conclusion. “…You can’t run away from yourself…”

‘In the Dark Water’ feels reflective and bright, painting a place that stands still with layered sound. The mood of the soundscape seems to oscillate between between ethereal, almost whimsical tones while pulling against deeper tones. “…In the dark water, time standing still…”.

‘Tears of the Sea’: ‘Waterflowers’ – ‘Tears of the Sea’

‘Waterflowers’ is a bright song with building rhythms that feel like droplets. The soundscape leads us all through a world we barely know. “…Dancing through the borders of everything we know…”. Its sound retains the album’s etherealness, while pulling at its airiness paired with solid, evocative description.

‘Little Death’ feels still, with quiet melodies that eulogise a small moment in time, that seems to be a lot more. “…In your little death I am born again….A moment in time will forever remain in your little death…”. It’s heady with an expansive yet quiet pull towards the ethereal.

The final and titular track on the album, ‘Tears of the Sea’ feels like a resolution steeped in wistfulness and even heavy melancholy. Each track we’ve heard so far seems to boil down and pool to this one, a track that acknowledges and makes explicit the themes that you could only feel or hear before.

“…Love is growing silently inside the roots of the tree…

…Spreading oh so slowly, like a dream inside of a memory…

…I see you and my heart opens up to feel the tears of the sea…”.

Conclusion

‘Tears of the Sea’ by Watercolored is slow, ethereal, mysterious and magical. Its soundscape and lyrics feel deep and immersive, offering a cinematic experience over a typical album track-by-track listen.

Its movement is slow and deliberate, while its expansive notes seemingly take you to another world. Full, immersive and undeniably memorable.
