‘The Fall’ by Jack Bailey is Heartache in a Pop Ballad

‘The Fall’ by Jack Bailey is a moving pop ballad that paints vivid images of the blind-sided end of a relationship. The song’s pianos are heavy with emotion, while the song’s lines seem to flow into the next. These lyrics create vivid, yet heartbreaking imagery, really highlighting the circumstances of the break-up and eluding to the fallout.

Its almost as though Bailey is processing this break in real time, trying to make sense of his ex-lover’s reasons to end it while being on the move (almost). “…You’re a backstage lover, so you break when I’m gone…”. “…I see you’re now where you belong…”.

‘The Fall’: Lyrics and Storytelling

‘The Fall’ chronicles the disintegration of a love, because of seeming mistrust, doubt and miscommunication. The two people in the relationship aren’t connecting on the same level anymore. “…I want to kiss you, but you’d rather take my hand…”. One of the two people in the coupling has fallen out of love, while the other was unaware till this point.

“…I felt the fall of a love first hand…”.

The singer talks about giving up his dreams to support their significant other. The tone of the song the first time these lines are heard turns bereft and almost alone.

“….(I) sold all my dreams and bought your Neverland,

…Left your Eden, now I’m down…”.

By its climax, ‘The Fall’ is bitter, angry that there was doubt and heart-broken that led to this. The lines in the song’s bridge seem to even scorn any olive-branches and paths to reconciliation. This while they remember the ache of how things were before.

“…I take my coffee black and bitter like the doubt.

…The behaviour of a saviour, take a bow…

It’s the fall of a love you planned…”.

‘The Fall’ by Jack Bailey is a lyrical gut-punch, that sounds like thoughts cascading on the page. It seems to take restraint to not allow the words to spell out at once, This with the song’s emotionally heavy soundscape allows the track to move the listener while keeping them engaged.
