A Vibrant ‘Splash Royale’ Ride Wth Instrumental Surf Rock with Fly Janet

Fly Janet, the Denver, Colorado/Texas surf rock duo consisting of Chris Badger and Drew Haught craft great indie instrumental rock withth their latest EP, Splash Royale. The name Fly Janet itself is a playful nod to the mysterious Janet Airlines, a clandestine shuttle service tied to Area 51. But don’t let the enigma behind their name distract you from the music because this EP is a sunny, laid-back showcase of indie instrumental rock at its finest.

With Splash Royale, Fly Janet leans into the nostalgic vibes of surf rock while giving it a modern indie twist. It’s a collection of four tracks, each carrying its own distinct personality, but together, they weave a cohesive soundscape that feels like the soundtrack to a carefree summer road trip. Let’s dive into the tracks.

The EP opens with “50k A Day,” a high-energy track full of happy-go-lucky vibes. It’s built around a catchy muted guitar riff that sets the stage for a feel-good, rock-inspired chorus. The song blends classic surf rock with a modern twist, making it an instant favorite of mine. It’s the perfect soundtrack for a coastal highway drive with the windows down.

Next, “Hang Glider” slows things down a bit, settling into a mid-tempo rhythm. The transition from the fast pace of the opener feels smooth, giving listeners a chance to relax and soak in the atmosphere. “Head of Cow” takes a softer, more reflective turn. This laid-back track captures the dreamy charm of a Hawaiian holiday, where time seems to pause. The lush guitar tones and soothing vibe make it a musical escape.

The EP wraps up with “Pipe Dream,” a nostalgic and beautiful instrumental piece filled with warmth and emotion. The brilliant bassline anchors its wistful melodies, creating a gentle yet memorable ending. It feels like reminiscing about cherished memories, leaving you introspective and satisfied. Chris Badger and Drew Haught balance classic surf rock elements with fresh modern indie rock sound, making their music easy to enjoy. The EP’s crisp production highlights every note, allowing their playing to shine.

In just under 10 minutes, Fly Janet manages to capture the essence of what makes surf rock so timeless, its ability to transport you somewhere far away without needing words. I really enjoyed listening to some well made melodic no frills instrumental indie rock. This EP is a breezy, feel-good collection of tracks that’ll have you daydreaming about sunny skies and endless waves. So grab your metaphorical surfboard and give it a spin, you won’t regret it!
